MCHINJI-(MANA)-Several people have lost property and sustained injuries after floods hit Kaigwazanga Trading Centre in Mchinji.
The floods, which followed days of persistent rainfall, submerged the trading centre for the first time in its history, rendering the Mchinji–Mkanda road impassable and cutting off access to the area.
Affected residents say the rains alone were not heavy enough to cause such flooding, raising suspicions that the water may have originated from the nearby Mchinji Hills.
The disaster has left scores injured, with several houses collapsing.
Livestock and crops have also been washed away, worsening the situation for already vulnerable households.
Meanwhile, the District Disaster and Risk Management Committee (DRMMC), working alongside Area DRMC is on the ground assessing the extent of the damage and coordinating response efforts.
Authorities are yet to establish the full scale of the destruction as assessments continue and those injured have been assisted.
