Former President Joyce Banda

Former President of Malawi, Joyce Banda, shared her insights on the country’s political situation in a recent interview.

She revealed that she had been a witness to the agreement between current President Lazarus Chakwera and the late former Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima, which stipulated that each would serve as the country’s leader for five years.

Banda expressed her opinion that this agreement was not feasible due to the leadership style of Chakwera.

She pointed out that Chakwera had made it clear he would retain his position as President, contradicting the promises made when the coalition was formed.

The former President also spoke about her departure from the coalition.

She explained that she left after Chakwera’s decision to remove her son, Roy, from his ministerial position, which had been held for only five months.

Banda emphasized that there was nothing more she could do under the circumstances, as the power to appoint ministers rests solely with the President, in this case, Chakwera.

Turning to the upcoming elections, Banda stated that she has already made it clear that she is not pursuing a return to power.

However, she expressed surprise that some people still support her, noting that her name is on the ballot.

Banda explained that this reflects the people’s desire for leadership that can address the challenges the country is currently facing.

She also mentioned that the Malawian people have encouraged her to return to politics, expressing confidence in her ability to lead and serve the country effectively.

Banda believes that her experience and skills make her well-suited to lead Malawi through the difficulties it faces.

When asked about the possibility of forming alliances with other political parties, Banda stated that she does not believe in forcing parties into alliances.

She pointed out that in the past, Malawi had experienced situations where political parties were coerced into alliances, with outcomes that were far from successful.

Banda reflected on her experience in the political arena, particularly with her interactions within the previous coalition government, and emphasized the importance of voluntary cooperation between parties for a successful alliance.

She concluded her remarks by sharing her thoughts on the current political climate, expressing hope that the country can move forward with effective leadership, free from coercion and political manipulation.

The interview with Banda was conducted by Zodiak Broadcasting Station, where she offered her views on the political developments and the path ahead for Malawi.
