The Malawian community in Ireland through the Association of Malawians living in Ireland [AMAI], on Sunday, 5 July 2015 held independence celebration activities marking 51 years since Malawi attained her independence on 6 July 1964.

Among the activities on the day were live music, open air barbeque and a friendly football match between Malawi and Ireland teams; which consisted of Irish nationals from within the Dublin area and Malawians living in various parts of Ireland.

Malawi side carried the day by sending the Ireland team down, winning by four goals and Ireland team consoled themselves with two goals. Earlier, the activities which took place at Setanta GAA Grounds in Ballymun, Dublin were opened by a non-denominational prayer session which was led by Pastor McDonald Ndovie.

During the service he said there is a need to pray for Malawi, for continued peace, law and order. He also urged Malawians in diaspora to be positive and focused on their dreams and aspirations and help in developing Malawi.

’’Let us help in changing Malawi by being innovative and look beyond on what we can do back home in Malawi. God brought us here in Ireland for a reason, let us take the knowledge we gain here back home and change our country.’’

Later in the day there was another football match between Malawians, which saw Malawi select Team A taking on Malawi select Team B. The winners were Team B. There is a large and growing number of Malawians currently living in Ireland and most of them are students. For a pictorial focus of the day, click on this link: http://tinyurl.com/amaimalawi
