BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost )-United Transformation Movement (UTM ) President Dalitso Kabambe has assured the nation to end rural poverty with sound economic policies.

He observed that “its laughable that, 61 years after gaining independence, some Malawians are still living in grass-thatched houses and without electricity”.

Speaking at a rally he held at Kanyama Sports Ground in Dedza on Monday, Kabambe attributed the situation to the tendency of electing leaders who lack a clear vision for developing the country.

He emphasized that it is now time for people to start voting for capable leaders, from local councilors and Members of Parliament (MPs) to the President.

The former Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) Governor stated that when choosing leaders, people must have solid and justifiable reasons for their choices, as the culture of voting without careful consideration has contributed to the country’s underdevelopment.

Kabambe promised that within the first two years of his administration, starting from September 16, 2025, Malawi will begin producing its own fertilizer.

He added that his government will transform smallholder farmers into owners of agribusinesses, and this transformation will take place across all districts in the country.

The economist further said that by the year 2030, Malawi will be among the African countries with the highest agricultural yields.

Kabambe also said that the one million jobs that have long been promised to the youth by other leaders in the country will finally become a reality once his party takes over government.

He emphasized that once elected this year, his government will make job creation easy and will also reduce the cost of living.

For instance, Kabambe stated that under his administration, the price of fertilizer will not exceed MK50,000 per 50-kilogram bag.

The UTM leader added that the initiative will empower many young people to engage in farming and take agriculture seriously as a business.
