The Karonga Business Community (KBC) on Friday distanced itself from the group that Malawi government suspects that it is planning to dethrone the ruling Democratic Progressive Party.
On 1 June this year, the National Intelligent Bureau (NIB) implicated Bishop Martin Mtumbuka of the Catholic Church in Karonga Diocese, KBC and other activists in the north that they participated in the meeting organized by the Public Affairs Committee (PAC) northern chapter in Mzuzu where its main agenda was to plan for regime change.
Speaking to the Media, Chairperson for KBC Wavisanga Sulungwe trashed the allegation.
“The allegations are untrue and as KBC we don’t know anything about the matter. But I, only learnt from the media that our organization’s name was implicated in such thing,” said Sulungwe.
Sulungwe one of the vocal activist n in the northern region said “this is part of dirtying my image.”
“Karonga Business Community is not a political organization and its agendas are far from politics. As business people, we work with the government of the day,” said Sulungwe.
According to him, his organization respect the country’s constitution which criminalizes anyone involved in such offence.
He said “as KBC we did not receive any invitation letter, beside that, PAC is for the members of the clergy and not us.”
When asked if PAC indeed organized the meeting as reported in the media Rev Father Wesley Mtekateka of Anglican Church in Karonga said “as one of the northern chapter PAC leader the development is news to us.”
State spies are yet to issue a comment on the matter.
