BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Limbe Police have arrested two Indian nationals after they were allegedly found in possession of stolen ESCOM cables in a dramatic operation carried out in Blantyre.
Speaking to MaraviPost publication, Sub Inspector Sam Kadyole, Deputy Public Relations Officer for Limbe Police Station, confirmed the arrest of 50 year old Kalwinber Sinds and 24 year old Sahib Kahlon, both Indian nationals and residents of Namiwawa, who are currently in police custody following the incident that occurred on February 18, 2026, around 5:00 PM at Maselema.
Police reports indicate that the arrest followed a crucial tip from a well wisher who alerted authorities about a container suspected to be loaded with stolen ESCOM cables and scrap metal, allegedly prepared for export.
Acting swiftly on the intelligence, detectives from Limbe Police Station launched a follow up operation and conducted a thorough search of the container at Maselema.
During the search, officers recovered a substantial quantity of copper and aluminium suspected to be stolen from ESCOM infrastructure.
Police seized 195.6 kilograms of copper and 364.2 kilograms of aluminium, which were later positively identified by officials from the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) as their property.
Authorities believe the recovered materials were part of critical electricity infrastructure, whose theft often leads to power disruptions and costly repairs.
The two suspects are expected to appear before court soon to answer charges related to possession of suspected stolen property.
Police have reiterated their commitment to protecting public infrastructure and warned that cable vandalism remains a serious offence that undermines national development efforts.
In a related development, the Limbe Dalton Magistrate Court has sentenced 34-year-old Charles Chamasowa to seven years imprisonment with hard labour after being convicted of theft and malicious damage.
Chamasowa, who hails from Mphonde Village under Traditional Authority Nkhumba in Phalombe District, was found guilty of offences that also involved damage to property.
Limbe Police say the recent arrest and conviction send a strong message that law enforcement agencies will not tolerate crimes targeting essential services and public property.
