The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Patricia Kainga Nangozo, met with European Union (EU) Ambassadors to the African Union and Malawi, Javier Perez and Rune Skinnebach, respectively, to discuss preparations for the upcoming Africa Union-European Union Ministerial Meeting scheduled for May 21, 2025.
The meeting, which took place on Friday, focused on shared priorities in prosperity, peace and security, mobility, and multilateralism.
The Deputy Minister reaffirmed Malawi’s commitment to democratic governance, inclusive development, and the rule of law, which align with the EU’s core values.
Nangozo expressed appreciation for the EU’s continued support in key areas such as agro-processing, climate-smart agriculture, health, and energy.
She specifically highlighted the Mpatamanga Hydropower Project under the Ministry of Energy as a significant initiative that demonstrates the EU’s commitment to Malawi’s development.
The Deputy Minister also welcomed the approval of financing for the Songwe Bridge, a milestone infrastructure project that will enhance regional connectivity and trade.
“This project will have a significant impact on our economy and will improve the lives of our people,” Nangozo said.
The meeting also provided an opportunity for the Deputy Minister to discuss areas of opportunity for Malawi in the context of the AU-EU partnership.
Nangozo emphasized Malawi’s dedication to being a reliable partner to the European Union and expressed enthusiasm for further engagement during the Malawi-EU Partnership Dialogue on May 28, 2025.
The AU-EU Ministerial Meeting is a significant moment to reflect on 25 years of AU-EU collaboration and chart a course for the future.
The meeting will provide a platform for African and European leaders to discuss key issues affecting the two continents and identify areas of cooperation.
Malawi’s relationship with the European Union has been strong, with the EU providing significant support to the country in various sectors.
