Malawi Digital 2023: A Quarter of the Country is Online

3 Min Read

Ongoing efforts to bring Malawi into the digital world have paid off, reaching a landmark statistic. As of 2023, approximately 25% of Malawi citizens have access to the internet. That’s over 5 million people from a country of 20+ million. However, mobile connections have outpaced internet connections, a pattern observed in other African nations.

The Importance of the Internet

Internet penetration statistics are of great interest to African nations, as they show how many citizens have access to consumer technologies in a world where they are becoming vital for communication. The economies of the future will use the internet, so future Malawians should be digitally literate in order to participate.

The internet is a useful tool that individuals, businesses and government organizations can leverage. For example, it allows faster and data-driven leadership from Malawi’s authorities. At the same time, it enables consumers to access informational and entertainment content. Many industries exist solely online, like e-commerce or sports betting sites that use the internet to enhance or build off of real-world activities. In the case of sports betting, it wouldn’t be restricted by borders as Malawian and international sports teams are available for betting. This enhanced access to information, with very few geographical restrictions, is another benefit to the internet that can help all citizens.

Malawi & the Internet

Per Kepios figures, the rate of internet penetration in Malawi advanced 2.6% from 2022 to 2023. This means that approximately 125 thousand people went online by taking the leap into the digital world, and that rate of increase is expected to continue over the next decade.

Along with the number of people accessing the internet for the first time, connection speeds are also increasing at a dramatic rate. In 2022, the average fixed internet connection speed in Malawi was 5.65 Mbps. This increased by a substantial 55.2% in the 12 months since, to almost 9 Mbps. However, the climb hasn’t stopped and more progress was made the following summer, as Malawi advanced 13 places in global internet speed rankings.

Having fast internet speed in newly digital countries is essential. This is because a slower internet connection cannot handle typical Western speed requirements, so it hampers digital applications.

Mobile Phone Usage in Malawi

Another pan-African trend that applies to Malawi concerns mobile phone usage. While internet penetration may be low in Malawi, 57% of the population have a mobile phone connection. While not all mobile connections will have internet access, the proliferation of smartphones is a core metric that shows digital adoption in many countries.

While Western countries use mobiles for convenience alongside desktop internet, many African countries are skipping desktop adoption in favor of mobile solutions. Smartphones carry many of the same capabilities but are cheaper and require less infrastructure, making them the natural choice for tech-savvy Malawians. With services like Starlink opening up to Africa, it can enable Malawi’s 80% rural population to enjoy internet connections that the 18% in urbanized areas enjoy.

Part of Africa’s mobile boom came from Chinese brands such as Tecno, who capitalized on Africa’s emerging tech economies throughout the 2000s. Reacting to this, a concerted effort by Samsung and other companies has further popularised smartphones in Africa. Smartphones remain rare in the grand scheme for Malawi’s residents, though they are likely to be the primary mode of accessing the internet in the future.
