The Tusker Awards, an annual awards which highlights an elite selection of Africa’s greatest products has awarded a third of its categories to Malawi!
The Tusker Awards is run by the The Safari Index, a respected database of everything Africa can offer, including game lodges, camps, reserves, parks and safari ‘hotspots’. The prestigious awards are nominated by the team and then voted for by the public. Three of Malawi’s products, Chelinda Lodge, Chelinda Camp and Malawian Style have received awards.
Malawi’s Chelinda Lodge hit the top spot and claimed the award for the ‘Ultimate Unique Safaris’ category. Chelinda Lodge is located in Malawi’s Nyika National Park, the largest in the country. Nyika extends across the great plateau, a granitic dome offering an environment like no other in the whole of Africa. Because of this, the park has a number of unique features, such as an incredible variety of wildflowers, spectacular cloud formations, and a thriving population of leopards, which are regularly seen. Chelinda Lodge has six wooden cabins all of which are double-storeyed, with en-suite bathrooms and cosy fireplaces. A range of activities are on offer to guests through their owners Central African Wilderness Safaris, a local tour operator that runs accommodation and safari experiences around Malawi. These include game drives, walks, hikes, fishing, cycling, cultural tours, and star-gazing. If northern Malawi is on your bucket list, then this accommodation is a must.
Not too far away, in the untouched beauty of Nyika lies the sister accommodation – Chelinda Camp, which takes the award for the ‘Ultimate Self-Catering Safaris’ category. Offering family chalets with kitchens, four two-bedroom chalets as well as six twin-bed rooms, Chelinda Camp is the perfect choice for a self-catering holiday in Africa for groups of all sizes. The camp overlooks the area’s rolling hills and grasslands, as well as a dam. Much like Chelinda Lodge, guests can do all the same activities.
As Malawi has so much diversity in its offerings, with multiple parks and reserves, beaches, watersports and cultural experiences, tying them all together sounds like the perfect itinerary. With this in mind, the incredible Southern Explorer Tour bymakes its mark and takes the award for ‘Ultimate Adventure Safaris’. This 7 or 11 day tour takes you into the wilderness of Liwonde National Park where you will discover elephants by the Shire River, onto the Zomba Plateau where you will witness stunning scenery and nature walks, and then down to the shores of Lake Malawi where you can enjoy kayaking, snorkelling and scuba diving in the clear waters.
It comes as no surprise that Malawi comes out on top at these awards with many unique accommodations and unforgettable safari experiences waiting to be discovered. Congratulations to all concerned!
