President Arthur Peter Mutharika has granted civil servants a two-week holiday from December 23 to January 5 2015 and has assured them that they paid before and by December 19, 2014.
Civil servants have been given the holiday to celebrate Christmas and New Year festivities with their families, according to a statement signed by Chief Secretary to government George Mkondiwa.
Last month some civil servants did not receive the salaries on time due to what they called “technical problem” with the government payment system at the Malawi Switch Centre (MALSWITCH).
This is the system which is used to transmit payment data from Government to Commercial Banks through Reserve Bank of Malawi.
“Following the granting of the extended festive holidays, the Accountant General shall ensure that all civil servants are paid before and by 19th December, 2014.
“May I take this opportunity to wish all civil servants a Merry Christmas and Prosperous New Year. Please ensure safety of yourself and your family during this period always,” said Mkondiwa.
Institutions that provide emergency and essential services such as hospitals, police, Immigration and airports will be required to be operational.
Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Finance Ronald Mangani also assured public officers that the Payment System has been rectified and is now undergoing validation tests to ensure timely payment of future salaries.
