BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Minister of Health, Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda, has expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Indonesian government for donating MK200 million worth of assorted laboratory medical supplies to support Malawi’s efforts in containing the Mpox outbreak.
Speaking at the handover ceremony in Lilongwe on Thursday, Kandodo highlighted that the donation will play a crucial role in decentralizing Mpox testing in major hospitals, including Mzuzu Central Hospital (MCH) and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH ) in Blantyre.
The Minister reaffirmed Malawi’s commitment to ensuring that the supplies are utilized effectively to serve their intended purpose.
She also extended her appreciation to other partners for their continued support in the fight against the outbreak.
On his part, Indonesian Consular Taliq Kidy Anchor noted that the donation follows a significant visit by Indonesia’s Vice Minister of Health Dr. Dante Saksono Harbuwono, during the Global Health Summit in Malawi.
He said the visit not only strengthened diplomatic ties between the two nations but also laid the groundwork for long-term collaboration in health and beyond.
Mpox is an infectious disease that can cause a painful rash, enlarged lymph nodes, fever, headache, muscle ache, back pain and low energy.
The disease is caused by the monkeypox virus (MPXV).
Malawi has so far recorded 15 confirmed Mpox cases since the first one was detected on April 17,2025.
