Malawi President Mutharika

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—President Peter Mutharika and his running mate Atupele Muluzi are still insisting on their stand that the results aired and published in different local media houses are not a true reflection of the what is on the ground.

Speaking on behalf of Mutharika to Zodiak radio monitored by MaraviPost, Muluzi said the incumbent President is ready to accept results only from the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).

“The president would like to ask Malawians to wait for official results from MEC. Mutharika is a president who respects the rule of law and also Malawi Electoral Commission. As of now MEC has not yet announced results.

“I understand there are some who are celebrating. This is very dangerous because if MEC releases results contrary to their expectation they will not be willing to peacefully accept the defeat. The president would like to assure Malawians that he will accept results announced by MEC as it is the only body that is mandated to do that job,” said Muluzi.

Atupele on Thursday told the media that he might not accept a loss in fresh presidential vote as legitimate, saying the election is not fair.

“If Dr. Chakwera had won, the election fair and square I would have congratulated him but unfortunately that is not the case. The election results that are circulating are illegitimate and I will not accept the outcome,” Atupele wrote on his facebook page.

However, Malawi’s first president in the multiparty democracy Bakili Muluzi, who is his father, has pleaded with presidential candidates and their supporters to peacefully accept outcome of the fresh presidential election held on Tuesday.

Malawians went to poll on Tuesday after the court nullified the 2019 presidential election on February 3, 2020 and ordered a rerun within 150 days.

According to unofficial results, opposition candidate Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has won with a landslide having amassed 2,510,328 votes followed by Mutharika with 1,645,530 votes.
