fake project in Zomba
Police in Zomba the eastern city of Malawi on Friday arrested Clement Nazombe from Traditional Authority (AT) Malemia in the same district for stealing money from starving Malawians.
Confirming the development, Sergeant Patricia Superiano said the arrest follows a tip from the traditional leaders under TA Ngwelero.
Traditional Authority Ngwelero said the man was obtaining K5000 from each household for them to access a 50 kgs bag of fertilizers and maize seed.
“He said the project was under the process of achieving the millennium goal. Each household was paying K5000,” said Ngwelero.
“According to him, the said money was intended to process the registration card for the beneficiaries,” he added.
Ngwelero said that he personally went to Zomba District Commissioner to ask if the office is aware of the development.
“You know TA Malemia was once a victim to these kind of thieves especially from a man who obtained K100, 000 from him saying he has been elevated to the senior chief and that the money was to process for the ceremony,” he disclosed.
“So after hearing this from one of my junior, It smelled fishy and when I asked the DC’s office they said they don’t know anything it’s when we reported the matter to the police,” he said.
The police said the suspect is expected to appear to the court soon and have appealed to Malawians to report to their nearest police office they have seen such kind of people in their area.
