LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Civil Society Elections Integrity Forum (CSEIF) has issued a powerful statement urging all stakeholders to safeguard peace, democracy and the rule of law during what it has described as a defining moment in the country’s history.

In the statement signed by Benedictor Kondowe, Chairperson for CSEIF said the upcoming general elections are not just about electing leaders but represent a solemn test of the nation’s collective commitment to democracy.

The forum warned that while the polls present an opportunity to strengthen democratic gains, they also carry the risk of eroding public trust in the foundations of the Republic if mishandled.

Kondowe stressed that the legitimacy of the elections hinges on the free will of Malawian voters, who must be able to cast their ballots without coercion, bribery, intimidation or manipulation.

He reminded the public and political leaders that the only sacred and legitimate way to win an election is through the ballot. On social media debates and opinion polls may suggest various outcomes.

He emphasized that the true and final decision lies with voters and all contestants must be prepared to respect and accept the official results announced by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).

It called for prompt and fair handling of all electoral grievances through established legal mechanisms, cautioning that delays or denials of justice could undermine the credibility of the elections and destabilize the country.

The judiciary was urged to demonstrate its readiness to handle election petitions expeditiously, ensuring the process strengthens public confidence.

CSEIF also welcomed the presence of both local and international election observers, describing them as critical partners in promoting transparency and accountability.

However, Kondowe urged observers to ensure that their reports accurately reflect the reality of the electoral process to avoid confusion and mistrust, citing the experience of the 2019 General Elections when inconsistent observer reports created tensions.

The organization further urged all political parties and candidates to demonstrate statesmanship by accepting the people’s verdict or pursuing lawful remedies without resorting to violence, incitement or extra-legal measures.

Kondowe said true leadership is reflected in the ability to prioritize peace and unity over personal or party interests while MEC was reminded of its duty to deliver results that genuinely reflect the will of Malawians.

Peace, CSEIF noted, remains Malawi’s greatest asset and must not be sacrificed at the altar of political rivalry. The statement appealed to political leaders, the media, civil society, security agencies and voters to work together to prevent the elections from becoming a trigger for division, hatred or conflict.

It also emphasized the importance of professional conduct by security forces and polling staff to ensure the voting process remains free, fair and credible.

It urged Malawians to verify information before sharing and called on the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority and law enforcement agencies to take firm action against those deliberately spreading lies to destabilize the electoral process.

In concluding the statement, Kondowe called on all Malawians to rise above division and embrace constitutionalism as the nation heads to the polls.

“Either we rise above division and uphold constitutionalism, or we undermine the trust that holds our Republic together. Above all, we must keep hope alive and never let go of the dream of a united, peaceful and prosperous Malawi,” he said.

Only two days before the polls, CSEIF’s message serves as a timely reminder of the responsibility that lies with every citizen to ensure that Malawi’s democratic journey is protected and strengthened for generations to come.
