2 Min Read

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Annie Mumba, convicted for the murder of her husband, Professor Peter Mumba, has died while on bail awaiting a hearing before Malawi’s Supreme Court of Appeal.

Family sources confirmed her death on Tuesday, stating that she passed away before the appeal proceedings could begin.

The development closes a case that had drawn national attention since the High Court’s ruling.

Mumba was found guilty by High Court Judge Mzonde Mvula in connection with the death of her husband.

Professor Peter Mumba was a chemistry lecturer at the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

He died on April 25, 2020, in circumstances that led to his wife’s prosecution.

The High Court convicted Annie Mumba and sentenced her, but she remained out on bail pending her appeal.

Her legal team had been preparing to challenge the conviction before the country’s highest court.

With her death, the Supreme Court of Appeal will no longer hear the matter.

The case had been closely watched due to the profile of the deceased and the questions it raised about domestic violence and justice in Malawi.

Legal analysts note that the appeal process now becomes moot, leaving the High Court’s conviction as the final judicial record.

The death also brings an abrupt end to a legal saga that had spanned more than five years since the professor’s killing.

Family members said funeral arrangements would be announced in due course.

The Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources has not yet issued a public statement on the latest development.

Professor Mumba’s death in 2020 had prompted calls for greater protection for academics and scrutiny of intimate partner violence in the country.

The case now stands as one of the most prominent murder convictions involving a university academic in Malawi in recent years.

With Annie Mumba’s passing, the judicial chapter of the story concludes, but the broader questions it raised about gender, justice, and accountability remain open.
