LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The country’s Civil Society Organisations Nutrition Alliance (CSONA) on Thursday, September 17, 2020 pushed for repositioning of the Department of Nutrition HIV and AIDS (DNHA) back to Office of President and Cabinet (OPC) with its own Principal Secretary.
The call is to effectively be able to coordinate other ministries implementing nutrition.
CSONA National Coordinator Bessie Ndovi observed that though the DNHA is under ministry of health, the department still has its mandate to coordinate other relevant ministries intact.
Ndovi was addressing Members of Parliament (MPs) during 2020/2021 national budget analysis dissemination workshop in the capital Lilongwe.
She however commended Tonse government for budgetary allocation increase towards nutrition from 0.5% last year to 3.7% saying is the step in the right direction.
Ndovi also lauded the current leadership for its political will to enact the 2016 Food and Nutrition bill saying the law will help institutionalize the food and nutrition council, food fortification at greater scale the nutrition in schools’ program.
Parliamentary committee on HIV/AIDS and Nutrition’s Chairperson Deus Gumba Banda lauded the alliance for yearly update on the sector’s status quo for better input when deliberating house sessions on budget allocation.
Malawi is still grappling with multiple burdens of malnutrition including child stunting, wasting and underweight at 37.1%, 3% and 11.7% respectively.
