Malawi’s U-5 children at risk over Polio vaccine shortage

1 Min Read

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi is currently experiencing a temporary shortage of the Polio vaccine, raising concerns among parents and guardians as the country continues efforts to eliminate the disease.

Confirming the development in an interview with Maravi Post on Friday, July 17, 2025 Ministry of Health spokesperson Adrian Chikumbe acknowledged the disruption, attributing to delays in the global supply chain.

“We’ve had a temporary disruption in the supply of the Polio vaccine in the country.

“However, we’re happy to inform the public that the issue is being resolved, and we are expecting the next consignment within one to two weeks,” said Chikumbe.

Chikumbe was quick to reassure the public that all other routine childhood vaccines, including those for measles, Tuberculosis (BCG), and diphtheria, are readily available in all public health facilities.

“There is no shortage of any other childhood vaccines. Parents should continue bringing their children for scheduled immunizations,” he added.

The Ministry has since called on the public to remain calm and follow updates from health authorities.

Malawi has been conducting periodic Polio immunization campaigns as part of its intensified efforts to eradicate the disease, following the detection of a wild poliovirus case in 2022.

The country, along with its regional partners, has been working closely with the World Health Organization (WHO), Gavi, and UNICEF to boost immunization coverage.

Health experts warn that any gap in Polio vaccination coverage poses a significant risk, especially to children under the age of five.

The Ministry of Health has urged parents to be on alert for the announcement of resupply and to prioritize Polio vaccination as soon as stocks are replenished.
