MDF lioness coach Kaputa eyes CAF tourney

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Central region women’s football league champions MDF lioness have the intention of qualifying for this year’s Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) Women’s Champions League| COSAFA Qualifiers.

The Head Coach for the Team, Captain Kaputa revealed this on Wednesday after the finals of the MK2.5 million Dyna top four bonanza whose financier was the former D.D Sunshine Chairman, Anthony Msendema.

“This tournament has helped us ahead of the national championship later this month. I have tried several combinations during these two days and I am upbeat we are good to go.

“We want to be Malawi’s champions and qualify to CAF as Ntopwa football club did last year. Let me take this opportunity to thank the organizers of the bonanza, the girls were full of lust since they overstayed after the completion of the regional league and today we have seen their physicality and mental strength toward the game, explains Kaputa.

MDF lioness finished third in the bonanza following their 2-0 loss to Silver Strikers ladies on the opening day.

The lioness however, reorganized themselves on the second day by thrashing Hungry Lions 4-0, courtesy of Fazila Chiyembekezo’s brace, Mervis Misomali, and Laita Magombo’s goals.

Silver Strikers ladies emerged the Champions of the bonanza after winning the Women’s Capital City derby against Rivals Civil Women team 3-0.

Chikondi Gondwe banged a brace and the other goal was scored by Deborah Henry.

The 2024 Malawi’s Women’s Championship shall be played by ten (10) teams which are comprised of the three top teams from the 2023 regional leagues and one team that will win the play-offs for the three leagues’ fourth-placed teams which commenced yesterday in Blantyre at Mpira, Stadium.

The first and second-placed teams from the regions are seeded from the playoffs and will be joined by the two winning teams from the second playoffs in the quarter-finals slated for Lilongwe on the 23rd and 24 April 2024.

The Malawi Defence Force giants will join the championship at that stage by being the Champions in the central region league and other seeded teams are; MK Academy, Ntopwa FC, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Women, and Moyale Sisters.

The National Championship this year, shall be played on a knock-out basis.
