New Book on Malawi Economy Launched

By Jones Gadama

The University of Malawi (Unima) has launched “The Oxford Handbook of the Malawi Economy,” a comprehensive book that provides insights into the country’s economic development.

The book, edited by Hope Chavula, Professor Harold Ngalawa, Associate Professor Boniface Dulani, and Thomas Chataghalala Munthali, covers key issues such as political economy, macroeconomic policy, social development, agriculture, and industrialization.

Unima’s executive dean for the School of Law, Economics and Government, Happy Kayuni, emphasized the importance of economic books in provoking economic thoughts and inspiring solutions.

“Books provide a framework for analyzing situations and making informed individual and professional economic decisions,” he said.

The book suggests that Malawi needs to take advantage of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to stimulate its economy.

According to Hope Chavula, one of the editors, the book highlights the need for transformative social policies, agricultural development, and industrialization to drive growth.

Book reviewer Felix Lombe noted that the book’s contents can be used by scholars, policymakers, and researchers, among others.

The launch of “The Oxford Handbook of the Malawi Economy” is a significant contribution to the country’s economic discourse, providing valuable insights for growth and development.

The book’s comprehensive analysis and recommendations offer a roadmap for Malawi’s economic development, highlighting the need for strategic policies and investments in key sectors. As the country looks to drive growth and development, “The Oxford Handbook of the Malawi Economy” is a timely and valuable resource.
