Open Letter to Malawi Vice President Chilima on why he appears disinterested

3 Min Read

Right honorable,

I have been hesitant to write you because there is a rule in our world, the women world. There is this UN gazette rule that a woman who frequently draws your man’s attention must be put under surveillance. I did not want to find myself under the radar of Madame Mary. But I hope she will understand that the office you occupy is a public office that sometimes draws not so pleasant attention.

Mr vice president, let me start by expressing my disappointment on how your zeal has suddenly conspicuously dwindled. When I look at your cut on those rare times that MBC TV features you I see a retreating face. Quite the opposite of that jovial and lively frame that graced our television sets the first quarter of the DPP’s rule.

I know that there are forces that have been pulling in the opposite direction which have made you to decide to slow down and take a back seat but that will not do yourself and the nation any good sir. As I told you in the other letter, yours truly as well as many of my kind, would one day like to see you travelling across the country in the real presidential convoy not the MG2. Didn’t I say that it will be wonderful to have our own Obama-type president taking a small run to board a presidential plane?

You see sir, the office that you are occupying has a very bad history and very bad precedence. We know what you are going through is just an inheritance of some bad omen that goes together with the vice presidency. But the good news is that Malawians sympathise with occupants of that endangered office. Aiming to graduate to plot number one should, therefore, be your ultimate goal which you may labour to achieve if you let yourself take the back seat in managing the country’s affairs.

Politics being what it is, I know it will be difficult and not very presidential for you to tell us the citizens that all is not well with your office but your actions are communicating to us sir. When, despite being the minister responsible for public events you take a back seat during independence celebrations, we read what you are telling us sir.

When you get into the stadium with bodyguards that are armed to teeth as shown in that trending picture we know that you are reminding us how endangered a species you are becoming. When you cut a disinterested tired face in some rare MBC appearances we know the devil that has decided to sit in your endangered office is denying you peaceful sleep.

However, as a well-meaning admirer, let me conclude by advising you to rekindle the flame and strength that you had for the sake of this beautiful but cashgate ravaged nation. Ignore all the pulling forces because Malawians will sympathize with you as precedence has taught us. You must also beef up your advisory team. I just noted that you have parted ways with that vibrant team you had during the campaign days as a token of appreciation which has weakened your think-tank capacity. All the best right honorable as you re-invigorate your efforts.
