CASABLANCA-(MaraviPost)-Egypt kicked off their Africa Cup of Nations Group B campaign with 2–1 victory over Zimbabwe, courtesy of a stoppage time winner from captain Mohamed Salah.
The Pharaohs were made to work hard for the three points as Zimbabwe produced a disciplined and fearless display that threatened to derail Egypt’s opening match plans.
Zimbabwe stunned the seven time African champions in the 20th minute when Prince Dube broke the deadlock, finishing calmly to put the Warriors ahead.
The goal lifted Zimbabwe’s confidence as they defended resolutely, frustrating Egypt’s attacking efforts throughout the remainder of the first half.
Despite dominating possession, Egypt struggled to break through Zimbabwe’s compact defense with several attacks breaking down in the final third.
Egypt returned from the break with renewed urgency, pushing higher up the pitch and increasing the tempo of their passing.
Their persistence finally paid off in the 64th minute when Omar Marmoush produced a moment of brilliance to restore parity.
Marmoush collected the ball deep, embarked on a powerful solo run and finished clinically to make it 1–1, reigniting Egypt’s hopes.
The equalizer shifted the momentum firmly in Egypt’s favor as Zimbabwe were forced to absorb sustained pressure.
As the clock ticked towards full time, it appeared the match was heading for a draw, a result that would have been celebrated by the Zimbabwean camp.
However, Egypt’s talisman Mohamed Salah had the final say in the contest.
In the 91st minute, Salah found space inside the box and fired a precise left footed shot past the Zimbabwe goalkeeper to complete the comeback.
The late goal sparked jubilant celebrations among the Egyptian players and fans, while Zimbabwe were left heartbroken after coming so close to a famous result.
The victory places Egypt in a strong position in Group B, level on points with South Africa, who also won their opening fixture.
Egypt will next face Bafana Bafana on December 26 in a potentially decisive clash, while Zimbabwe take on Angola on the same day as they seek to revive their tournament hopes.
