Mzuzu-(MaraviPost)—There are fears of looming hunger in the Eastern and Southern districts of Malawi following the sudden halt of rains in the areas.
At least 20 thousand households in the district of Balaka are more likely to be affected by the dry spell which has also spread to the Lower Shire districts of Chikwawa and Nsanje.
Crops such as maize, cotton and millet have begun to wilt due to lack of rainfall for over a month.
Meanwhile, the concerned households have called upon government to come to their rescue by providing them with winter crops which they will resort to to avert the situation.
However, Spokesperson in the Ministry of Agriculture, Gracian Lungu, has disclosed that the ministry is closely monitoring the situation and will soon decide on the next course of action.
In January this year, Minister of Agriculture, Robin Lowe, indicated that Malawi expects to have a bumper yield of maize estimated at 4 million tones, which is much more than what the nation requires.
