The Executive Director of the Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI), Sylvester Namiwa, has expressed surprise over President Lazarus Chakwera’s failure to visit the site where the tragic plane crash occurred on June 10, 2024.
The crash claimed the life of the then Vice President of Malawi, Dr. Saulos Chilima, along with eight others.
Despite the significance of the tragedy, President Chakwera has not yet set foot at the crash site, a fact that has raised questions among Malawians.

Namiwa stated that it is concerning that, several months after the incident, the President has not made an effort to personally visit the location.
He emphasized that as a leader, Chakwera should have gone to the site to pay his respects and acknowledge the gravity of the loss.
Namiwa further remarked that the absence of the President at the scene is puzzling, considering that he has made other trips since the accident.
He questioned why Chakwera has not prioritized visiting the crash site, given the magnitude of the tragedy and the national mourning that followed.
According to Namiwa, Malawians deserve an explanation for the President’s reluctance to visit the area.
He pointed out that leaders have a duty to show solidarity with the people, especially in moments of national grief.
Namiwa concluded by reiterating that the President’s actions raise concerns about his leadership and his connection with the people he governs.
As Malawians continue to remember the victims of the tragic accident, questions persist about whether President Chakwera will eventually make the long-expected visit to the crash site.
