Actor Phwedo Pleads Not Guilty to Defilement and Child Abduction Charges

By Jones Gadama

Renowned actor Tumpe ‘Phwedo’ Mtaya has pleaded not guilty to two counts of defiling a 15-year-old girl and child abduction. Phwedo is accused of committing the alleged crimes from February 18 to February 22, 2025, and having custody of the minor without consent during that period.

During the court hearing, Phwedo’s defense lawyer, Mkwima Tchizi, requested further disclosure of information from the State.

Specifically, the defense asked for the victim’s Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) student identification card or Maneb records, which indicate her age, as she sat for MSCE exams in 2024. The defense also requested an age assessment report to verify the victim’s age.

The court has adjourned the defense’s application hearing to May 16, 2025, to allow the State to provide the requested documentation. The case has sparked significant interest, given Phwedo’s celebrity status.

The allegations against Phwedo are serious, and if convicted, he could face severe penalties. The defense’s request for further documentation highlights the importance of verifying the victim’s age and ensuring that justice is served.

As the case continues, it remains to be seen how the court will rule on the defense’s application and ultimately determine Phwedo’s guilt or innocence. The outcome of this case will have significant implications for all parties involved.

The case serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting children’s rights and preventing abuse. It also highlights the need for thorough investigations and fair trials to ensure justice is served.
