Timothy Mtambo’s alleged commitment to the DPP-AFORD Alliance: A hypocrisy exposed

In recent statements, Timothy Mtambo, once a prominent figure in Malawi’s street activism through the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC), has claimed full commitment to supporting the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) in addressing Malawi’s economic challenges.

As AFORD’s Vice President, Mtambo insists that his allegiance lies with the current Mutharika administration and that any failure by this government would also reflect a failure for AFORD. However, a closer examination of Mtambo’s political trajectory and past declarations reveals a glaring contradiction that undermines the credibility of his newfound loyalty.

His claims are not only unfounded but deeply hypocritical, betraying both the AFORD agenda and the electorate’s expectations.

To begin with, Mtambo’s recent pivot to endorse the DPP-AFORD alliance starkly contrasts with public declarations he made just before and during the 2020-2024 election cycle.

At that time, Mtambo categorically distanced himself from the DPP, particularly condemning their choice of running mate, Jane Ansah.

He went beyond mere criticism, actively campaigning against the DPP, warning Malawians about the dangers of returning the party to power.

His vocal opposition was not a subtle disagreement but a full-throttle rejection of DPP’s political project, which logically means he was not supporting the AFORD agenda as it was formally aligned with DPP.

This contradiction calls into question the sincerity of Mtambo’s current assertions.

If Mtambo was truly committed to AFORD’s agenda, he would have supported the DPP-AFORD alliance from the beginning or at least remained consistent in his stance.

Instead, his previous actions reflect a deliberate choice to undermine the alliance, directly opposing the partnership that now, retrospectively, he claims to champion.

This flip-flop is not just a matter of political repositioning but a fundamental breach of trust with both his party and the citizens who followed his activism.

Mtambo’s role as AFORD Vice President should ideally mean he upholds and promotes the party’s interests consistently.

Yet, by publicly rejecting the very alliance that defines AFORD’s current political engagement, Mtambo effectively distanced himself from the party’s strategic direction.

His refusal to support the partnership with the DPP during critical electoral moments undermines his claim to be working in AFORD’s interest.

In essence, if he was not supporting the alliance, he was not truly working for AFORD’s agenda. This glaring inconsistency must be acknowledged and scrutinized.

Moreover, Mtambo’s narrative of shifting from activism to political consolidation appears to be a convenient cover for political self-preservation.

His insistence that Malawians should “give DPP and AFORD time and space” to deliver on promises sounds more like an attempt to shield his new political allies from scrutiny rather than a genuine call for national unity.

Given his previous aggressive activism, which was critical of government failures and corruption, this sudden transformation raises questions about the motivations behind his change of heart.

The context of Mtambo’s political evolution further complicates his claims.

His leadership in the HRDC was marked by vehement opposition to the ruling party’s governance, mobilizing citizens to demand accountability and justice.

To now claim allegiance to the same administration he once opposed suggests a significant departure from his previous principles.

While political realignments are not uncommon, Mtambo’s case is problematic because it appears to lack transparency and consistency, which are essential for credible leadership.

Adding to the complexity is Mtambo’s public denunciation of those who associate him with anti-government protests, labeling such claims as “false and malicious.” While it is true that he officially left HRDC over five years ago and that the coalition has since developed its own leadership, Mtambo’s past activism and public image are intrinsically linked to protest politics. His attempt to erase that legacy seems more like political damage control than an honest reflection of his history.

This selective memory undermines the authenticity of his current political stance and confuses the public about his real commitments.

Furthermore, Mtambo’s assertion that the failure of the Mutharika administration would equate to failure for AFORD conveniently ignores the complex dynamics within the alliance.

AFORD’s identity and political relevance have historically been distinct, with its own ideological positions and constituencies. By conflating AFORD’s fate with DPP’s success, Mtambo risks reducing the party to a mere appendage of DPP, eroding its independent voice.

This diminishes the significance of AFORD’s political agenda and raises legitimate concerns about whether Mtambo is prioritizing party principles or personal political gain.

From a broader perspective, the Malawian public deserves clarity and consistency from their leaders.

Mtambo’s contradictory positions breed cynicism and skepticism, especially among those who supported him during his activist days.

Leadership is tested not only by the ability to adapt but also by the courage to remain principled amidst changing political landscapes.

Mtambo’s apparent abandonment of his previous stance without adequate explanation or accountability damages his credibility and leaves many questioning the authenticity of his current commitments.

It is also important to consider the implications of Mtambo’s position on Malawi’s democratic process.

By urging Malawians to stop “propaganda” and unite behind the government, he risks stifling legitimate dissent and political debate, which are vital in any healthy democracy.

His tone suggests a preference for political consolidation over inclusive governance and transparency, which could undermine efforts to hold the government accountable.

This is especially concerning given Malawi’s history of vibrant civil society activism, which Mtambo once championed.

Timothy Mtambo’s claims of full commitment to the DPP-AFORD alliance, premised on his role as AFORD Vice President, are fundamentally flawed and hypocritical.

His previous public rejection of the alliance, active campaigning against the DPP, and distancing from the coalition’s agenda expose a deep inconsistency in his political narrative.

Rather than embodying principled leadership, Mtambo’s current stance appears driven by political expediency and self-interest.

For the sake of transparency, accountability, and democratic integrity, it is crucial that these contradictions be thoroughly examined and openly discussed.

Only then can Malawians make informed judgments about the true nature of Mtambo’s political commitments and the future of the DPP-AFORD alliance.

DPP, AFORD sign legal binding electoral alliance

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi’s political landscape witnessed a defining moment on July 26, as the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) officially entered into a historic electoral alliance, signaling a united front ahead of the upcoming elections.

The landmark signing ceremony brought together key political figures, including DPP’s Dr. George Chaponda, AFORD Secretary General Madam Linda Limbe, Reverend Maurice Munthali, and DPP’s running mate Jane Ansah.

The event was marked by calls for unity, national progress, and a renewed commitment to democratic values.

Leaders described the alliance as more than a political strategy calling it a pledge to put the country above individual party interests.

“This alliance is about putting Malawi first. We are coming together not just to contest an election, but to shape the future of this nation,” declared Dr. Chaponda.

In his remarks, AFORD President Enoch Chihana reaffirmed the party’s founding ideals, inspired by the legacy of the late Enock Chakufwa Chihana.

He said the alliance aligns AFORD’s democratic vision with DPP’s development-driven agenda.

Chihana emphasized that the coalition unites experience, foresight, and grassroots support setting the stage for what could be a transformative chapter in Malawi’s democratic journey.

As the alliance prepares to hit the campaign trail, Malawians now watch with anticipation hopeful that this partnership will usher in an era of unity, stability, and inclusive national development.

Opposition DPP-AFORD’s electoral alliance talks in final negociation stages

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) has announced that its talks with other opposition parties, including the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) are almost finalized.

According to Annie Maluwa, AFORD’s National Publicity Secretary the alliance talks have reached 80 to 90 percent completion and are expected to be unveiled soon.

Maluwa made the disclosure in an interview, emphasizing that the parties are working towards a united front for the September 16 general election.

However, AFORD’s president, Enock Chihana, has yet to collect nomination papers from the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), a crucial step in showing interest in the election.

Despite the delay, Maluwa assured that there is still sufficient time for Chihana to collect the nomination papers.

Meanwhile, political commentator Victor Chipofya has urged the parties involved in the alliance talks to disclose the details of their agreement before submitting nomination papers later this month.

Chipofya believes this transparency will enable Malawians to make informed decisions about their vote.

The potential alliance between AFORD, DPP, and other opposition parties could significantly impact the outcome of the election.

A united opposition could consolidate votes and present a formidable challenge to the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

The upcoming election is expected to be highly competitive, with several parties vying for power.

The success of the opposition alliance could depend on their ability to present a unified front and articulate a compelling narrative that resonates with voters.

AFORD open to electoral alliances, but only on people’s terms

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) President Enock Chihana has announced that his party is willing to form a political alliance with any party that shares its ideologies ahead of the September 16 polls.

Chihana made this statement during a political rally at Mgona ground in Lilongwe, emphasizing that AFORD will not be swayed into joining alliances that do not prioritize the welfare of Malawians.

Chihana’s remarks come on the heels of his party’s past experiences with political alliances.

He specifically cited the Tonse Alliance in the 2020 fresh presidential elections, where he felt duped, as a reason for being cautious this time around.

“We will not be tricked again into joining political alliances that do not have people’s welfare at heart,” Chihana declared.

The AFORD leader asserted that if no party aligns with their ideologies, they are prepared to go solo in the elections and emerge victorious.

This stance underscores AFORD’s determination to prioritize its principles and the interests of the people over political expediency.

Chihana’s statements reflect a broader trend in Malawian politics, where alliances are becoming increasingly crucial ahead of the polls.

Other parties, such as the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and United Transformation Movement (UTM), are also engaging in talks to form potential alliances.

The DPP’s Secretary General, Peter Mukhito, revealed that his party is in advanced discussions with several parties, although the identities of these potential partners remain undisclosed.

As the election date draws near, the formation of these alliances could significantly impact the country’s political landscape.

AFORD’s cautious approach to alliance-building may serve as a model for other parties seeking to prioritize the needs and welfare of Malawians.

AFORD forgives arrogant Yeremiah Chihana after apology

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The opposition Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) has forgiven its sole Member of Parliament (MP) Yeremiah Chihana after made apology of his misconduct to the party’s Disciplinary Committee hearing.

Defiant Chihana was summoned on May 20, 2024, over remarks he made during the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) political rally in Blantyre a week ago.

In a press statement issued on Tuesday, May 21, signed by AFORD Secretary General (SG) Linda Limbe said Chihana should not at any time make any pronouncements without being authorized by the party.

“The Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) summoned Hon. Yeremiah Chihana to appear before the Disciplinary Committee on 16th May, 2024. This follows the pronouncements at DPP rally where the following statements were made: That as a Member of Parliament elected on AFORD ticket and an ex-official member of the Party’s National Executive Committee, he was delegated by the party and its leadership to attend and represent it at the DPP rally in Blantyre; That he was duly authorized to make a statement regarding an Alliance and support from AFORD Party to Professor Peter Mutharika in the 2025 elections which is not the position of the party,” reads in part AFORD statement.

The statement adds, “Following his failure to attend the hearing on 16th May, 2024, he was summoned again to appear before the Disciplinary Committee on the 20th May, 2024. On this day, he appeared and the resolutions were made.

“Following his apology rendered to the Disciplinary Committee, the Party has forgiven Hon. Yeremiah Chihana, the Party agreed that Hon. Yeremiah Chihana should not at any time make any pronouncements without being authorized by the Party, as a Member of Parliament and Ex-Official of the National Executive, he is permitted to actively participate in all party activities in conformity with the Constitution and the party reserves the right to take action if he contravenes the guiding principles of Alliance for Democracy”.

AFORD is currently enjoying political Malawi’s atmosphere after breaking from President Lazarus Chakwera’s Tonse Alliance government.

AFORD President Enoch Chihana told the nation that will go sole in 2025 Presidential Elections.

NAP dares Malawi Police on AFORD, DPP members attackers’ arrest

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The country’s National Advocacy Platform (NAP) has dared Malawi Police Service to arrest attackers on Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) members.

The call has been made following law enforcers’ silence on two political violence being advanced by overzealous Malawi Congress Party (MCP) cadres to other parties in Lilongwe.

In a press statement issued on Saturday, May 18, 2024 signed by NAP Chairperson Benedicto Kondowe demands immediate arrests of the violence instigators.

“The National Advocacy Platform (NAP) unequivocally condemns the recent political violence against
Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) supporters in Mponela on 17th May, 2024. This latest attack, allegedly by MCP functionaries, perpetuates the disturbing trend of political violence undermining our democracy. We reference our prior statement from 24th February 2024, addressing the brutal assault on Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) supporters at Mbowe Filling Station.

“The police must swiftly and thoroughly investigate the attacks on AFORD supporters in Mponela and the February 24th incident involving DPP supporters. Perpetrators must be identified, arrested, and prosecuted without delay,” demands Kondowe.

He observes, “Despite clear video evidence identifying perpetrators, no arrests have been made. This inaction is unacceptable and threatens our nation’s peace and democratic process. Political violence endangers lives, erodes democracy, and disrupts national harmony.

“As the 2025 elections approach, escalating violence risks destabilizing our country, fostering fear, and suppressing free expression and participation. Party leaders orchestrating anarchy must be held accountable for their actions, as they threaten our nation’s stability and democratic values”.

Kondowe adds, “The implications are profound: such violence creates fear, discourages civic participation, and undermines public confidence in law enforcement and the government’s ability to protect citizens and uphold the rule of law. Failure to act decisively against political violence signals dangerous impunity and a disregard for justice and democracy”.

NAP demands further, “The government must enhance security measures, especially in violence-prone areas, protect citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly and expression, publicly condemn all political violence, and commit to safeguarding democracy.

“All political parties and leaders must denounce violence, promote peace, tolerance, and respect for democratic principles, and engage in dialogue to prevent future incidents and ensure a peaceful electoral process”.

However, Malawi Congress Party (MCP) continues to dispute claims that the attackers are its members.

AFORD leader Chihana wishes Muslims happy Eid- Mubarak celebration

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-The opposition Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) president Enock Kanzingeni Chihana and his wife, Tadala Chihana, wish all Muslims a happy Eid- Mubarak.

In a press release issued on Wednesday, Chihana and his spouse called for the renewal of continued peace among all believers in Malawi.

“My wife and I do realize that there can never be meaningful national development without peace. It is therefore our wish and prayer that the affectionate relations that exist amongst different faith groups in the country will continue to grow as the nation moves to greater success.

“May the spirit of Eid bring peace, opulence and happiness to your life,” reads the statement signed AFORD presidential press officer, Philip Kamangirah.

Karonga By-Elections: Aford wants electoral body to disqualify MCP candidates for open handouts

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-The opposition Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) wants Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to disqualify Malawi Congress Party (MCP) candidates in the forthcoming By-Elections in Karonga over open handouts.

The call comes barely hours before MEC holds local government elections in some wards in Karonga slated for March 26, 2024.

On Sunday, there has been video circulating for MCP official distribution money to communities in one of areas’ classrooms.

In a press statement issued by Aford Director of Elections, David Katete on Monday, March 24, says if MEC will not act on MCP’s electoral process laws violence is sign of biasness which is against statues of the land.

“The Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) is saddened with events surrounding the by- elections voting process in Karonga. People are voting on 26th March, 2024 to elect new office bearers in a position as Councilors. The registration and campaign exercises have been completed.

“We wish the Malawi Electoral Commission a good job as they monitor events until winners are declared in the three wards”, reads Aford statement in part.

The statement adds, “We believe that Elections are a key for nurturing peace and stability in transitional settings and are often, as a result, one of the central rudiments of peace and transitional political solidarities.

“It is our considered view that this call for a performance of order, peace, free and fair election is often explicitly disciplinary”

Aford observes, “The Malawi Congress Party officials have been spotted distributing handouts in all by- elections that have taken place in Nsanje, Zomba, Dedza and currently in Karonga, The evidence about this is overwhelming yet nothing is coming out from Malawi Electoral Commission.

“According to the laws of Malawi on electoral reforms, the Constitution provides for a disqualification of candidates that have openly defied the law and use handouts to woo voters in contradiction of their initial wishes. Against this background, we feel that MEC is bent towards bringing anarchy to our electoml laws in the coming elections”.

The party appeals, “We are calling upon Malawi Electoral Commission to disqualify the MCP candidates in all the three Wards. Failure to do so, MEC will be showing biased and untrusted execution of their duties as they serve this country.

“Alliance for Democracy would further wish to call upon all actors to remain peaceful and respect the democratic process”.

Aford adds, “We encourage all parties to make it clear to their supporters that any attempts to use money as demonstrated by Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to disrupt the democratic process is unacceptable.

“If our demands will not be met, we shall have no option but drag MEC to court for promoting the spirit of handouts when the law is clear on what should happen during election campaign”.

MEC is yet to respond on Aford request.

MCP has not yet said anything on alleged handouts to party supporters ahead of Tuesday’s By-Elections.

Road to 2025: Aford’s Enock Chihana goes solo, rejects alliance

By Twink Jones Gadama

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) President, Enock Chihana, has unequivocally dismissed the possibility of allying with other political parties for the upcoming 2025 general elections in Malawi.

This announcement, made during a gathering in Lilongwe, left many perplexed, as AFORD had been a crucial partner within the Tonse Alliance in the court-sanctioned presidential elections of 2020.

Chihana’s decision has sparked intense debates and raised questions about AFORD’s political strategy, as well as its prospects in the ever-evolving Malawian political landscape.

The Rise and Fall of AFORD

AFORD, once a formidable force in Malawian politics, has experienced both triumph and turbulence throughout its history.

Founded in 1992, the party quickly gained popularity, championing the cause of democratic reforms and advocating for the protection of human rights.

However, as the political landscape shifted, AFORD gradually lost its footing, facing internal divisions and leadership turmoil.

AFORD’s Stint in the Tonse Alliance

Following the landmark court-sanctioned presidential elections in 2020, AFORD played a significant role as part of the Tonse Alliance, an amalgamation of political parties that successfully challenged the incumbency.

Led by Lazarus Chakwera, the alliance ushered in a new era of hope and promised transformative change for Malawi.

AFORD’s involvement in the alliance raised expectations and sparked hope for a revival of the once-prominent party.

Chihana Solo Flight

The inexplicable rejection of future alliances by AFORD’s President, Enock Chihana, has not only shocked political pundits but has also left supporters and stakeholders bewildered.

Chihana’s decision to go solo in the 2025 general elections seems to disregard the principles that underpin AFORD’s participation in the Tonse Alliance.

The party, despite its current struggles, could have benefited from the synergy and wider appeal of aligning with other like-minded political entities.

The National Convention and AFORD’s Future

AFORD’s upcoming national convention in March this year presents a critical milestone in the party’s rejuvenation strategy.

Amidst calls for unity and internal restructuring, Chihana must address concerns surrounding his decision to shun future alliances, which may impact AFORD’s credibility and prospects.

The convention serves as an opportune moment for party members to voice their opinions and shape AFORD’s trajectory moving forward.

The Socio-Economic Quagmire

While Chihana’s rejection of alliances has dominated the headlines, AFORD’s President also seized the opportunity to address pressing socio-economic challenges facing Malawi.

Calling on the reigning administration to work closely with various stakeholders, Chihana acknowledged the need for collaborative efforts in finding sustainable solutions.

From rampant corruption and escalating inflation to limited access to healthcare and education, the people of Malawi are yearning for tangible improvements in their daily lives.

Conclusion

AFORD’s President, Enock Chihana, has sent shockwaves through Malawi’s political sphere by dismissing the possibility of future alliances in the 2025 general elections.

This decision has raised questions about the party’s strategic vision and its ability to carve out a distinct path in the ever-changing political landscape.

As AFORD prepares for its national convention in March, the party stands at a crossroads, needing to address internal divisions and reposition itself as a viable contender.

The socio-economic challenges facing Malawi serve as a reminder of the urgency for unity and collaboration among political parties to effect meaningful change for the country and its people.

AFORD’s Chihana nods to federal government adoption

By Vincent Gunde

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) President Enock Chihana on Thursday asked people in Chitipa district and the country as a whole to support calls for the adoption of federal system of governance in Malawi in order to ensure that the national cake is equitably distributed.

Chihana’s call for the support has not come on the surprise as many northerners are in abstract poverty.

The region does not stand to be the headquarters but trading centre as no tangible developments have been put in place for it to develop tremendously.

Chihana for Federal System of government

Chihana’s endorsement for a federal government has just come a day after the concerned citizens grouping served President Lazarus Chakwera with a letter dated January 3, 2023 with copies to the Speaker of Parliament and Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), among others.

First to support the calls for a federal government in Malawi was Bon Kalindo during stage acting, who argued that the way individual members in the Tonse Alliance government are abusing public resources.

Kalindo asked the donor community to freeze aid to Malawi for an audit enquiry to find out how billions of Pounds provided to Malawi has failed producing meaningful impact apart from self-enrichment by politicians.

In the letter addressed to President Chakwera, the concerned citizens claimed that since Malawi adopted multiparty democracy, the country has been moving backward in terms of developments which cannot be blamed on people’s failure but the system.

The concerned citizens say Malawians cannot continue to be betrayed by the few greedy politicians who represent their own interest other than those of Malawians that are in pain and suffering for no developments in their districts besides paying taxes to government.

They say the citizens have now started the process of collecting signatures from as many ordinary Malawians home and abroad demanding a referendum for the adoption of the federal system of governance in Malawi.

’’Each Government that came into power since 1994 has been famous for corruption which led to state capture,’’ reads the letter in part.

The concerned citizens in the letter warn the Tonse Alliance government that if the call for adoption of federal government is not yet possible, they shall take radical approach to ensure that progress is made towards a referendum observing that Malawians cannot be blamed for putting wrong people in the driving seat for all the past six governments.
