The surge in his wealth follows a remarkable 365 percent increase in the shares of FDH Bank Plc, the flagship company of his financial empire.

Chakwera hails Mpinganjira for investing in Cancer fight

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-President Lazarus Chakwera has applauded business mogul and philanthropist Thomson Mpinganjira, for contributing resources to the fight against cancer, which is reported to kill nearly 12000 people in Malawi each year.


LLast year, Mpinganjira opened the country’s first cancer hospital, the International Blantyre Cancer Centre (IBCC), established through the Thomson and Barbara Mpinganjira Foundation and partners to provide radiation and advanced diagnostic services.

Speaking when he opened the National Cancer Centre in Lilongwe on Wednesday, President Chakwera described Mpinganjira as a Malawian in the private sector who decided to do his part to strengthen the nation’s capacity to treat cancer.

“A clear example is Mr. Thom Mpinganjira, right here, who invested his resources to develop the International Blantyre Cancer Centre, which I had the honour of officially opening in Blantyre last year, and it is truly inspiring to see him here as well.

“This exemplifies a spirit of teamwork that we should all emulate—a spirit that celebrates every success by one Malawian as a victory for all Malawians,” he said.

Mpinganjira was driven to invest in the facility after the death of his wife, Barbara, in January 2019, after being diagnosed with cancer in January 2017.

Opened in March last year, IBCC, the first to offer radiotherapy in Malawi, is a 50-50 partnership between the Thomson and Barbara Mpinganjira Foundation and the Online Medical Concept Company from Luxembourg.

The Centre provides radiotherapy, brachytherapy, chemotherapy, and medical imaging services, which previously required the government to spend MK25 million to treat a single cancer patient abroad.

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)–High Court Judge Dorothy DeGabrielle has sentenced business mogul, Thomson Mpinganjira to nine years imprisonment with hard labour.

Mpinganjira, who is the first Malawian to own a bank, was answering six charges under the Corrupt Practices Act relating to attempting to induce High Court judges Mike Tembo and Healy Potani to exercise their functions corruptly by offering them K100 million.

He was, however, convicted on two charges of offering an advantage to public officers.

The sentence will run from the day he was convicted on September 10, 2021

DeGabrielle told the court that Mpinganjira acted with impunity to subvert the course of justice and that in regards to such, the mitigating factors that were presented before the court did not carry weight.

Mpinganjira has taken one year and nine months to know his fate following his arrest by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on January 22 2020 on allegations he attempted to bribe five judges that heard the historic May 21 2019 presidential election nullification petition.

Malawi’s business mogul Thom Mpinganjira bails out Wanderers Club with MK20.2 million for players’ four months salary

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi’s business mogul and former FDH Holdings Limited Chief Executive Director Dr. Thomson Mpinganjira has volunteered to support Wanderers Club with the payment of 50% of players’ salaries for four months totaling to MK20.2 million.

Dr Mpinganjira gesture comes following SOS sent by the Executive Committee to supporters and various stakeholders that the club was in financial trouble.

The business mogul has offered the financial bail out in his personal capacity as concerned with the the welfare of the Wanderers players.

“Dr Mpinganjira has come to our rescue in this difficult time of Covid-19 that he has volunteered to support Wanderers Club with the payment of 50% of their salaries for four months.

“The players have not been receiving their salaries since December 2020 although they were at 50% of their normal rates,” says Wanderers official site.

With this development, it means that the players will be paid for December 2020, January and February 2021 arreas and they will be certain to be paid in March 2021.

“To ensure that the money goes straight to the players, the payment is going to be made directly into the players and officials accounts for easy accountability and tracking.

“Wanderers greatly appreciate the gesture made by Dr. Thom Mpinganjira and is calling other well wishers to help the team in this time of need,” lauds Wanderers site.
