LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-One of Malawi’s renowned agricultural experts, Felix Jumbe, has called on farmers across the country to begin preparations early for the 2025/2026 farming season.
Jumbe emphasized that timely preparation is critical for increasing agricultural productivity.
Speaking to MBC Digital, Jumbe noted that when farmers plan ahead, they are better positioned to assess their farming needs comprehensively.
He explained that early planning allows farmers to prepare their land while the soil is still soft and manageable.
In addition, it gives them adequate time to purchase essential farming inputs such as fertilizer and seed.
Jumbe stressed that being ready before the rains begin enables farmers to plant in good time, ensuring they make the most of the rainy season.
He added that this is especially important during seasons of erratic rainfall patterns, when missing the early rains can have a significant impact on crop yields.
The advice from Jumbe comes as part of broader efforts to improve food security and economic resilience in Malawi through improved farming practices.
His remarks serve as a timely reminder for both smallholder and commercial farmers to take proactive steps toward a successful and productive farming year.
….”The only crimeI committed in MCP for hatred was to contest against Chakwera in the2013 convention-Jumbe
LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Former Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Salima Central lawmaker Felix Jumbe has come out saying his former party hates him till now following open defiance against Reverend Lazarus Chakwera in the 2013 convention.
Jumbe disclosed that after the 2013 convention, the party was captured by Renaissance; MCP’s new blood led by Eisenhower Mkaka who made sure that all old guards be removed from the party.
The former MCP Campaign Director Jumbe told The Maravi Post in an exclusive interview over the weekend that whoever competed against Chakwera was labeled as “Nkholokolo”.
Jumbe disclosed that since 2013 despite campaigning for Chakwera’s presidency in 2019, he continued to face resistance from MCP’s new blood without any reason.
“Prior to the 2013 convention, The Daily Times carried an opinion poll that revealed that I was leading by 40% against Chakwera’s 38%. But came convention, Mkaka’s Renaissance group took over elective indaba to favor Chakwera. This did not stop me from supporting him. I was given a campaign director portfolio that I even used with resources to advance Chakwera’s agenda throughout the country for the 2014 Presidential elections.
“Under my leadership as MCP campaign director, the party managed to increase the number of Members of Parliament (MPs) from 25 to 55 in the 2014 elections. After Chakwera lost the 2014 Presidential elections, I continued to support him as leader of the opposition in Parliament but I faced resistance by the same group within the party,” explains Jumbe.
Former Salima Central lawmaker adds, “Despite resistance from within MCP, I became Agriculture Committee on Agriculture from 2014 to 2016 until Dzoole Mwale hated me so much to move committee motion to impeach but the moved failed to materials. The party leadership eventually moved me to Defence which was not my area of focus.
“Due to the same hatred within MCP new blood, the same 2016, I was expelled alongside others (Chatikha Chidzanja Nkhoma) from the party through a press conference. Chatikha challenged the party in court and she was reinstated. But I did not protest against expulsion keeping in mind that the new MCP blood wanted me out of the party”.
Jumbe disclosed further, “Out of desperation and default, I joined the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in 2018 when its leader Peter Mutharika identified my expertise in Agriculture I was eventually appointed as Agriculture Development Market Corporation (ADMARC) General Manager.
“After Chakwera won the 2020 Presidential polls, I was very happy to serve the person I campaigned for in previous elections. But had I known, the same MCP new blood led by Kusamba Dzonzi as ADMARC board chairperson rudely fired me from the corporation on his first day of office without any reason.
“I was fired when ADMARC procured 130,000 metric tones of fertilizer from a South African agent which gave Malawi US$100 million advance payment through National Bank and FDH bank. The fertilizer was armed to be sold at MK25,000.00 per 50 kilogram for the 2020/2021 growing season. After Chakwera canceled the deal, everyone knew exactly what had been happening on fertilizer and ended up buying it in the butchery”.
Jumbe said he has been trying to help the party with economically sound pieces of advice for delivery leadership under the Tonse Alliance banner but Chakwera himself chose not to take any hence the mess.
“Chakwera can not deliver anything tangible as he has been locked in MCP’s vicious circle with those personal interests, not for the nation. The MCP’s new blood vicious circle dictates Chakwera anything. This is the reason Chakwera don’t make a bold decision as Malawi leader only lip services; sugarcoating speeches, tours, and trip without clear output or results.
“Malawi currently needs an economically sound leader for proper structural adjustments to invigorate growth through agriculture. The economy is currently driving anything in the world.
“We don’t need traditional individuals who don’t have anything on economy lead nations. You end up messing the way Chakwera and Tonse have done. MCP and Tonse administration expertise within despite external support from us. Malawian must do away with tribalism, and regionalism when putting in leadership,” appeals Jumbe.
The Maravi Post will publish further articles on Jumbe’s next move of action ahead of the 2025 General Elections
This is the first exclusive interview Jumbe offered after being removed from ADMARC three years ago.
BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—The Tonse Alliance administration, under the leadership of Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi Congress Party, has engaged an extra gear in their ‘clearing the DPP rubble’ campaign with latest being the suspension of Felix Jumbe, acting Chief Executive Officer of the Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (Admarc).
According to statement released today Wednesday by the Board chairperson of Admarc, Alexander Kausamba Dzonzi, Jumbe has been replaced by Dhlelisile Matanda.
The Board has also suspended director of finance Harold Mwala and director of operations Garnet Gwembere.
Reasons for the suspension have not been explained in the letter.
“The Board is informing the members of staff that Dr. Felix Elia Jumbe has been suspended from acting as the Chief Executive Officer of ADMARC Limited, Mr. Harold Mwala from the position of Director of Finance and Mr. Garnet Gwembere from the position of Director of Operations.
“Following this development, the Board has appointed Mrs. Dhlelisile Matanda Phiri to act in the position of Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Gerald Ganizani in the position of Director of Finance and Mr. Michael James Mnenula in the position of Director of Operations,” reads the letter.
The suspension comes a week after President Lazarus Chakwera told the press in Lilongwe that board of directors of various parastatals must act on individuals who were appointed without following the due process, especially on political affiliation to the previous Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) administration.
Jumbe was once a Malawi Congress Party senior member but dumped it and joined the then ruling DPP after a long period of squabbles with MCP President Chakwera, who is now the Malawi leader.
The suspension of Jumbe also comes barely a day after Tobacco Commission (TC) suspended the deputy Chief Executive Officer Levi Phelani to pave for Ombudsman’s investigations into how he was recruited.
The commission also terminated a contract for Emily Banda Egolet who was Director of Human Resources and Administration because her recruitment did not follow procedures.
The development was confirmed by TC chairperson Harry Mkandawire, who is also second vice president of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) led by Chakwera in the Tonse Alliance led government.
In any political organization which has people of diverse background and different abilities, wrangles are likely to emerge. Prior to 2014 tripartite elections, 2011 to be specific, the first ruling political party in the multiparty democracy, United Democratic Front (UDF), was involved in a fierce struggle for leadership; Ken Msonda was the one leading the faction that was against Atupele Muluzi who imposed himself as the party’s President.
Prior to 2019 elections, Malawi Congress Party (MCP) was also embroiled in a fierce internal strife which threatened the survival of the party. The internal wrangles saw the political heavy weights like Gustavo Kaliwo, Njobvu Yalema, Felix Jumbe and Dr. Jessie Kabwira being dismissed from the party for opposing the party’s President Lazarus Chakwera’s autocratic leadership. The bone of contention was the coming in of Sidik Mia, who used his financial muscle to rise to the vice presidency in the party. Self acclaimed political analysts said that was the end of MCP and Chakwera. Where is Lazarus Chakwera today? I repeat! Where is LAZARO today?
Well, today the general public, especially the former ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) sympathizers have been treated to shocking news: Kondwani Nankhumwa has been summoned by the party’s disciplinary committee for a hearing.
According to a letter signed by the party’s disciplinary committee secretary Charles Mhango, some of the charges leveled against Nankhumwa include imposing himself as leader of opposition when Peter Mutharika had reportedly settled for George Chaponda, misleading the party’s president and plotting a revolt, meeting Malawi Congress official without getting consent from the president and his questionable background and academic qualifications.
To put all the reactions from the different quarters in one sentence: DPP has goofed. That’s the reaction from both DPP and Tonse Alliance supporters. But what is very interesting, in this internal wrangle, the hardcore DPP critics, who would not wish to see DPP in government again, are the ones spitting venom at the party’s executive for conniving to get rid of Nankhumwa. Imagine Z Allan Ntata writing on his facebook page that “if DPP is not careful, it will die a natural death. Fighting Nankhumwa because he’s more popular than all other old guards?” This is Ntata who is pro UTM and was one of the main actors in the struggle for change of leadership prior to 2019 and 2020 presidential elections.
Anyway, what brings me here is DPP internal strife, and Kondwani Nankhumwa happens to be the main actor in the whole saga. In my view, this crisis has come at a right time and DPP will obviously come out of this wrangle stronger than ever. This is the right time for the party to eject all traitors and start rebranding with those who are loyal. Loyalty in politics is of paramount importance. Some might think it’s the end of the party, but let me tell you in the face: It’s better to be embroiled in squabbles rather than being in a fake alliance as it is the case with Malawi Congress Party and UTM.
On the other hand, DPP created structures at the grassroots and created links with prominent personalities who have sustained forms of pervasive clientelism and patronage. Comeback is possible and these wrangles are a step towards 2025 victory. After all, Tonse Alliance government has already demonstrated that they don’t have a well-functioning administrative apparatus to successfully formulate and implement public policies. It is an alliance full of “talk talk” people. If MCP, a party that is remembered for torturing our grandparents, came back to power after spending 26 years in opposition, then DPP stands a better chance to quickly reorganize and challenge the feigned Tonse Alliance.
Of course what UTM-MCP gurus want in DPP is to see Nankhumwa taking the leadership. Even many DPP followers are of the view that Nankhumwa is so far the best because they can’t see beyond the buffoonery. Let me say it here without fear or favour: Kondwani Nankhumwa is a traitor. During the campaign rallies in preparation for June 23, 2020 presidential elections, Nankhumwa’s messages clearly showed that he was not in good terms with his fellow top officials in the party and he was on his own name recognition campaign. Victory for the party was not his priority.
On March 11, 2020, at the launch of Shire Valley Transformation Programme in Chikwawa North, speaking as Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Southern Region vice-president, Nankhumwa publicly accused some quarters in the party of tarnishing his image.
“When I spoke quoting the Bible during the rally held at Njamba, Blantyre [on Sunday], some people questioned why I was doing this when this is the time for fighting, but you have to know that even in the army they have a chaplain meaning that they, too, pray before going to war.
“I want to make it clear that I will continue quoting the Bible because that is the way I am and I will never raise my voice when speaking. I will continue conducting myself in the manner I have always been,” Nankhumwa said before he spoke briefly about the launch of the programme.
Nannkhumwa, who was by then the Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development Minister went further to say that some executive officials were plotting his downfall.
Considering the time Nankhumwa was uttering such words in public, one would concluded that the man was not fighting for victory of the party as a whole. He was building his own name at the expense of the party. Lest you forget, Nankhumwa has always been a darling of the UTM-MCP hand clappers. Should the party entrust such a person, who has questionable loyalty to the party, with a responsibility to lead the party? Anyway, the convention will decide.
But, in whatever the case, political party leadership must go to a person who exudes steam of unwavering support and loyalty to the party. However, everyone must be given a chance to participate in the battle for the leadership as per democratic principles and inviting Nankhumwa to a disciplinary committee hearing does not necessarily mean blocking him from contesting for the hot seat. After that hearing people should expect nothing but a strong opposition which will successfully challenge Chakwera, who appears to be timid and not well versed in the art of governance.
We witnessed fierce squabbles in MCP. Kabwira, Jumbe, Njobvuyalema, Kaliwo and others were ejected. In 2018 Chatinkha Chidzanja did not only resign from the party but also tore apart and set ablaze MCP cloth in full view of journalists in an apparent demonstration of her anger towards Lazarus Chakwera. But as I have asked, where is Lazaro today?
So just summoning Nankhumwa mukati chipani chikutha? Mwatani kodi?
Even if Nankhumwa goes, new faces will emerge just like we saw it in MCP. Richard Chimwendo Banda, Eisenhower Mkaka and others came in the limelight courtesy of the very same squabbles that led to ejection of the so called political heavy weights. This, therefore, brings me to my earlier position: Early bickering in DPP dreadful but necessary: ‘feigned’ Tonse Alliance beware.
SALIMA-(MaraviPost)-In the work of what he calls “cheap propaganda” from other quarters, Felix Jumbe has launched a challenging drive in Salima North Constituency amid campaign frenzy.
In his challenge he has set farming as a cataract for income generation and has set a 1 million target for farming families by the end of 2018/19 growing season.
Over the week, social media was awash with claims that Felix Jumbe has been earmarked as runningmate to renegade Vice President Chilima who ditched Democratic Progressive Party – DPP and formed United Transformation Movement – UTM.
Jumbe’s campaign for the 2013 MCP presidency was hinged on wealth creation through farming and the same was being purported to be his foil for the runningmate position to Chilima for the transformative era UTM promises.
“I have seen the posters and messages on Facebook and Whatsapp. This is the campaign period hitting up and propaganda like this from all quarters cannot be averted. I am not amused politically that they are linking me to someone who left our party (DPP). I am royal to the party and am not happy being linked to UTM,” explained Jumbe.
Asked why he has gone so quite over the period since announcing joining DPP in 2018, he indicated that he is now busy “domesticating” the wealth creation agenda in the constituency (Salima North).
“This is not time to politicize issues, I am busy working with people in Salima North domesticating the wealth creation agenda. Currently, I have already initiated a community bursary scheme for the area of Senior Group Saopampeni in TA Mwanza, assisted Lingadzi Farmers Corporative with access to certified seed and inputs, with assistance from TA Mwanza a location has been established at Thavite Trading Centre for a Health Centre cartering for the people from TA Makanjira, Mwanza and Khombedza.
“We have also set farming families challenge of a harvest work K1,000,000 from 3 acres of land. Some farmers have already grown crops like cowpeas, groundnuts, soya and rice. Other families have taken up a challenge of minimum of 10 mango trees per household. We want to transform the constituency economically without handouts and free items. The people have to adopt self-reliance in their economic activities,” he said.
Jumbe is known for his radicle ideologies in agriculture based economic transformation and over time he has been instrumental in formation and establishment of Farmers Union of Malawi, Seed Trade Association of Malawi, Poultry Association of Malawi, Malawi Export Council and the Competition and Fair Trade Commission of Malawi.
Politically, Jumbe went at loggerheads with Chakwera during his first term in parliament and was inadvertently fired unceremoniously from the party. He later joined the DPP and during last years’ convention, he was elected Deputy Director of Economic Affairs in the party.
BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—Malawi Congress Party (MCP) faction leader Chatinkha Chidzanja-Nkhoma, on Monday claimed she received death threats from unknown people whom she alleges are officials from the MCP.
Chidzanja-Nkhoma, who has accused MCP president Lazarus Chakwera of misgoverning the country’s major opposition party, made the remarks on the state controlled Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC).
“I have been receiving death threats from unknown people. They are warning me to stop criticizing the party’s president using Zigoba (pseudo names) on social network.
“I have tried to tell them to identify themselves, but to no avail,” she said.
Asked on whether she might have an idea of the identities of the people threatening her, Chidzanja-Nkhoma said “It’s difficult to guess because Chakwera came with new faces in the party.”
Writing on social media, Chatinkha also condemned the intolerance which has taken centre stage in the MCP.
“Inciting of hatred, violence and intolerance for those with opposing view in MCP has no place in Malawi and it must stop,” she wrote.
MCP leadership is yet to comment on the matter.
It is reported that Chidzanja Nkhoma sponsored the district chairmen case against the oldest political party in the country – apparently after pocketing funds from governing party operatives. They lost the case.
Chakwera fired her along with Salima Central MP Felix Jumbe for insubordination.
Chatinkha’s sentiments come barely few days after Daniel Mlomo, another leader of a faction of former regional and district chairmen that sued the MCP called on fellow ‘rebels’, including Chidzanja Nkhoma to lay arms and engage the party leadership in dialogue.
Mlomo, the MCP deposed long time central region chairman and self-declared leader of the disgruntled group of ex-chairmen and some party members of parliament, said everything comes to an end and the disaffected members needed to accept the fact.
Suspended Malawi Congress Party (MCP) spokesperson Jessie Kabwira said he remained the party’s mouth piece, challenging the suspension which was engineered by the party’s president Lazarus Chakwera.
Kabwira made the remarks when she was addressing a political rally she organized in her own constituency, Salima North West.
Kabwira challenged that there is no one in the party who can fire her, arguing she can only be suspended at the party’s convention.
“I am still the MCP spokesperson, and no one can fire me apart from the party’s members at the convention,” said Kabwira.
The Salima central law maker Felix Jumbe, who was fired from Malawi Congress Party (MCP) after attacking the party’s President Lazarus Chakwera’s style of leadership, has said his political career remains intact despite being relocated to the independent bench in the Parliament.
Jumbe’s remarks come in the face of public opinion that the lawmaker’s political career is in jeopardy following his relocation to the independent bench in the August house.
According to the vocal politician, such kind of scenarios always lifts him up.
He said despite being relocated to the independent bench in the August house he still remains the leader in his community as well the country.
“I am in the independent side because I love MCP and said the truth. But what you should know is that people in my constituency who put me on this seat are still on my side,” said Jumbe.
“I was born to be a leader and will remain a leader in any circumstances,” he added.
Jumbe who is also a renowned business tycoon rubbished report that he is no longer an MCP member.
“To be located to independent bench doesn’t mean that I am not part of MCP family. Constitutionally I am still an MCP member,” he said.
According to Jumbe some of his followers in his constituency are asking him to join other political parties because of the bad treatment he received from MCP.
Jumbe was fired by the MCP National Executive Committee (NAC) after being against the leadership of the party’s President Lazarus Chakwera.
He was also alleged to be among recycled politicians who wanted to join the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) but he vehemently denied.
Jumbe used to fire rockets at the party’s president Chakwera due to his style of leadership, subsequently comparing it to that of the late Kamuzu Banda.
He once took to social media posting an implicit sentiment on his personal Facebook account, targeting Chakwera’s style of mistreating other members who looked critical and a threat to his hot seat. .
It read, “a captain who begins to shoot his or her own soldiers, begins a journey of self-destruction and fails to cross the river because he/she will not have manpower to construct a bridge.”
True to this, Jumbe was demoted from his position as the party’s campaign director in the executive committee, to second deputy director ofstrategic planning.
Since he was stripped from his position in August, Jumbe has remained firm in his stand while basing his behavior on the fact that he is the party’s loyalist.
He recently told media that he cannot dump MCP for any other party because his affiliation runs deep in his blood as it started with grandfather then father who were both bonafide MCP members.
Jumbe once bemoaned the behavior of other party members who labeled him a dissident due to his behavior towards the party’s leader.
The former chairman of a parliamentary committee on Agriculture believes his fellow MCP members campaigned for his removal from the post.
LILONGWE (Maravi Post)—As all eyes and ears of most Malawians including opposition parties are at Masintha ground in Lilongwe to witness and prove the official welcoming of some political prostitutes to the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) today (Sunday) 27 November, 2016, some concerned Members of Parliament (MP) have started distancing themselves from rumours spread by some DPP senior officials.
