DPP apologizes to Muluzi over unpalatable remarks

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has extended an apology to former President Bakili Muluzi following comments made by party member Sameer Suleman.

The remarks were made in response to statements by Atupele Muluzi, who questioned Peter Mutharika’s age and suitability to run for president again.

DPP’s Vice President for the Southern Region, Joseph Mwanamvekha, acknowledged that Suleman’s comments were unnecessary and apologized to Bakili Muluzi.

Mwanamvekha also urged Atupele Muluzi to withdraw his remarks, expressing the DPP’s disappointment with his statements.

The incident highlights the need for politicians to exercise caution and respect when engaging in public discourse.

The apology by the DPP demonstrates a commitment to maintaining dignity and respect in political dialogue.

Blantyre, Malawi — Former President of Malawi, Bakili Muluzi, was present at COMESA Hall in Blantyre, where the United Democratic Front (UDF) is holding its national convention. The convention, which has attracted 1,200 delegates, is a key event for the party as it seeks to elect new leaders and strategize for the upcoming 2025 general elections.

Bakili Muluzi, who remains a significant figure in Malawian politics and the UDF, was warmly received by the delegates, many of whom view him as the founding father of modern Malawian democracy. His presence at the convention underscores his continued influence and support for the party as it navigates its future.

The convention has drawn not only UDF members but also representatives from other opposition parties, including the UTM, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and Petra. The participation of these parties highlights the importance of the event in the broader context of Malawi’s political landscape, where alliances and collaborations are likely to play a crucial role ahead of the next elections.

"This is a crucial moment for the UDF, and we are glad that our friends from other opposition parties have joined us. It shows that we are all committed to bringing change to Malawi," said one delegate.

As the UDF convention continues, political observers are closely watching the proceedings, particularly to see how the party plans to position itself in the 2025 elections and whether any formal alliances will emerge from these engagements.

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Malawi Vice President Saulos Chilima on Sunday, May 10, 2020 claimed that the former president Bakili Muluzi is threatening his life.

Chilima is Tonse Alliance’s runningmate to Lazarus Chakwera told the victory mega rally in Mzuzu that Muluzi has been sending young boys to intimidate him for his political prowes.Chil

The UTM leader advised the former president whose son Atupele is running for Democratic Progressive Party (DPP)-United Democratic Front (UDF) alliance that he focuses much on his retirement.

Chilima warned Muluzi over his past corruption charges under cover that the coming government will not spare him.

“Let me tell you, you have no right over my life. If you want your son to become the VP, let him just campaign, don’t stop people from campaigning in the eastern region”, VP claims.

He says UTM patron Noel Masangwi and eastern region governor Alhaj Sande have been attacked in Machinga.

Chilima therefore appead to alliance supporters not to pelt stones at DPP officials but rather do clean campaign for July 2, 2020 fresh presidential elections.

Have we forgotten about the infamous MK236bn Cashgate in Malawi?

Written By Steve Nhlane
Former president Bakili Muluzi once said “ Amalawi sachedwa kuyiwala (Malawians forget quickly).” He was referring to the atrocities the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) committed during its 31 years in power under the reign of Kamuzu Banda. And they are not few.
Ironically Muluzi was once MCP’s secretary general. In that position he was the party’s second most influential man. After Kamuzu.
But when Muluzi was making that statement at a rally, he rightly expected that Malawians had forgotten all that. This was when he was campaigning for a third term or an open term. It flopped.
Muluzi eventually settled for Bingu wa Mutharika to succeed him. And not Justin Malewezi his vice-president for two terms. Muluzi’s third term bid flopped not because Malawians forgot anything.
But because they remembered that they had the Constitution which put a cap on presidential terms. They also remembered that Muluzi’s 10-year rule had failed to lift them out of abject poverty.
At the time Muluzi was campaigning for a third and open term as president, donors who were contributing 40 percent to the national budget had also abandoned the country.
But perhaps Muluzi was right after all. The famous or infamous Cashgate was first noted in 2005 although it was mostly exposed in 2013. This is according to a forensic audit of the government of Malawi by auditors-RSM Risk Assurance Services LLP of the United Kingdom (UK). By 2014, the malfeasance could no longer be swept under the carpet. Hard cash in millions of kwacha was being kept or transported in boots of cars. A help hand spotted one of them. This led to more ‘discoveries’.
The Baker Tilly forensic audit only picked six months of the 2009–2014 plunder-from April to September, 2013-and uncovered that during this period alone civil servants and businesspersons had looted MK24 billion from the public purse.
When Rumphi East legislator Kamlepo Kaluwa was vocal about seven ministers in the Peter Mutharika administration were alleged to have been mentioned in the MK236 billion Cashgate report,
the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) went for him. But no-one in this government wants to talk about that report.
The issue now seems to be water under the bridge. All attention is focused on the tripartite elections. With elections only seven months away, there must be a huge sigh of relief among the seven ministers alleged to have been mentioned in the report. Amalawi anaiwala. (Malawians forgot about the plunder of K236 billion spanning 2009 and 2014).
When the Salima South member of Parliament Uladi Mussa was acting People’s Party president, and was vocal against government, it (government) went for him over allegations that he issued permits or passports to undeserving immigrants. Now that he is politically correct after taking camouflage in the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) that case is dead. Amalawi anaiwala. The same Uladi Mussa who was being demonized while in opposition is now a hero in DPP as its vice president for the centre.
How Malawi lost K577 billion or K236 billion will never be concluded under this regime. It is a forgotten issue. It is only ‘petty’ bulawulas who have the cheek to talk about it. But these are the issues opposition politicians-MCP’s Lazarus Chakwera, United Transformation’s Movement’s Saulos Klaus Chilima, People’s Party JB, ought to be pushing.
At what stage is the forensic audit report (if any) about the whopping K236 billion looted from the public pulse between 2009 and 2014? Of course, there have been other Cashgates-the 4.3 million liters of fuel (of 76 tankers of 35 000 litres each)-vanishing at Escom, the audit report about materials worth over MK10 billion Escom procured which may never be used in the next 10 years. Billions of kwacha vanishing at the Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (Admarc).
Mystery still surrounds the MK1.9 billion of the MK2.9 billion that Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (Mera) board approved to give to Admarc for maize purchases in 2016.
Some 20 MPs embezzled Constituency Development Funds-what is the status of this issue; five years after government’s Integrated Financial Management System (Ifmis) was hacked, improving public finance management remains a mirage as government is yet to procure a foolproof Ifmis.
The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC)warehouse in Lilongwe gutted immediately after the court ruled that there should be a recount of votes is a forgotten issue.
Meanwhile, the country has plunged further on the corruption perception index. As a result of all these, donors are yet to return to Malawi as they strongly believe Account Number One is a leaking bucket. The ultra poor will continue to be marginalized. Why? Because they forgot why they are in this predicament. Muluzi was very right.Amalawi sachedwa kuyiwala.

Malawi’s 54 independence; Former President Bakili Muluzi worried with high poverty levels

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-As the country is celebrating 54 years of independence, former president Bakili Muluzi has expressed worry over rising poverty and unemployment levels.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with The Daily Times, Muluzi said he wishes Malawians successful celebrations.

He, however, said it is unfortunate that poverty levels remain high in the country, 54 years after the attainment of independence.

Muluzi said what is more heartbreaking is that a significant percentage of Malawians are youths who are denied access to employment opportunities.

“My concern is that the level of poverty is high. There is high unemployment rate, especially among the youth, and nobody is denying it. This is what government should look into so that everybody lives with dignity and affords basic needs in life,” Muluzi said.

Muluzi, nevertheless, hailed Malawians who fought for the independence, saying the struggle was worth it.
He said the country has made significant gains in the last 54 years of independence.

“We have made a number of gains as an independent country. We are growing and continue to grow as a nation. We are in multiparty dispensation which is also growing,” he said.

Malawi got its independence from Britain on July 6 1964.

The country has lined up a number of activities to mark the day. They include military parades and football matches to be played during the festival period.

This year’s Independence Day celebrations are being conducted under the theme ‘Celebrating Freedom and Progress through Patriotism, Integrity and Hard Work’

Former Malawi President ‘Bakili Muluzi’ denies involved in road accident

Former President Bakili Muluzi has described as false news making rounds on social media platforms that he has been involved in an accident.

On Thursday morning the social media was a washed with reports that Muluzi is battling for his life at one of the private hospitals in the commercial capital Blantyre after being involved in road accident.

The information took the social media by storm with others calling Muluzi’s family on the matter.

Writing on his official facebook page Tailos Bakili, Muluzi’s son trashed the news describing it as fake.

“An online news site reported this morning that Dr. Bakili Muluzi has been involved in a road accident. This is false. Do not believe such propaganda news. As to the reasons why someone would create such false news, it also baffles me. God bless you all,” wrote Bakili.

Muluzi also trashed the reports in an interview with Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS), saying he has received several phone calls inquiring of the same matter.

The former leader has since deplored the tendency of faking news on social media platforms.

Former Malawi Speaker Sam Mpasu dies

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Renowned Malawi politician and author, Sam Mpasu has died.

According to our reliable source, Mpasu was found dead in his home in Blantyre today (Thursday) morning.
Maravi Post reporter is on the ground to gather more information.

Below is a historical background of Mpasu;

Sam Mpasu Biyeni!

Sam Mpasu (born 1945) was a Malawian politician, author, and former diplomat. He served as Minister of Commerce, Secretary General of the United Democratic Front (UDF) in 1999, and speaker of the Malawi National Assembly.

He served as a diplomat in the foreign service for the Malawi mission to Germany. While in diplomatic service in Germany, he wrote a book in 1975 entitled Nobody’s Friend, which got him arrested because the Kamuzu Banda regime thought that it was written about Kamuzu Banda. He was detained without trial for “two years, one month, one week, and one day” in Mikuyu Prison from 1975 to 1977.

From 1978 Mpasu worked at Lever Brothers (now Unilever) in various capacities until 1988 when he was seconded to run the Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI).

In 1991, while working for Xerographics, he joined a secret group headed by ex Secretary General of the, Malawi Congress Party turned businessman Bakili Muluzi whose aim was to build up opposition to Banda.

The United Democratic Front was voted into government in 1994.
Mpasu was elected Member of Parliament for Ntcheu Central, appointed Minister of Education and Government Chief Whip in Parliament.

He later served as Minister of Commerce and Speaker of the Malawi House of Assembly. His appointment as Minister of Commerce met with a lot of resistance since he was the Speaker of the House at that time.

The court attempted to block President Bakili Muluzi from posting him to this position. Mpasu later accepted it.

In 2008 a Malawian court sentenced him to a six-year prison sentence over charges of corruption and abuse of office which was famously know as the Field Yark Scandle dating back 14 years. He was released from jail in 2010 instead of 2014 due to good behaviour.

After the 2014.election he became present of the New Labour party where he became a, lone voice replacing Friday Jumbe, a former cabinet colleague who resigned from active politics.

Chilembe Day: Political leadership should be people-centered-DD Phiri

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Malawians are today observing a holiday in honour of national martyr Reverend John Chilembwe who was the first to publicly rise against the British colonial rule.

Rev John Chilembwe is thought to have born in 1871 and died on February 3, 1915. History states that he was a Baptist pastor and educator, who trained as a minister in the United States and returned to Nyasaland in 1901.

President Peter Mutharika is attending the main commemoration at Providence Industrial Mission (PIM) in Chiradzulu where Chilembwe established his church and headquarters.

Rev Chilembwe’s unsuccessful uprising was fought soon after the outbreak of the First World War after he had returned from America where he was educated with funding from Joseph Booth, a radical and independent-minded missionary.

A renowned Historian Dr Desmond Dudwa-Phiri says the country’s political leadership should embrace a people-centered leadership as was the dream of Rev Chilembwe.

Dr Phiri also says people in the country should remember Rev Chilembwe as a dedicated freedom fighter because of the courage that he had to fight for the cause of black people against white oppression.

Mzuzu-based social and political commentator Emily Mkamanga has however questioned the significance of commemorating Chilembwe Day separately and not along with other national martyrs.

Initially, Malawi had only 3 March as Martyrs’ Day but in the mid 90s former President Bakili Muluzi instituted a different day for Rev Chilembwe, saying his contribution towards independence was extraordinary.
