Mr President Chakwera, Malawi’s economy is too small for “bloated PSs, Cabinet”

Chakwera loosing track on governing Malawi

By Thandie Chadzandiyani

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera’s Tonse administration continues draining hard earn tax-payers money with unjustified appointments for appeasing party zealots, family members and friends.

For instance, the Tonse Alliance government has increased the number of principal secretaries (PSs), booming the annual wage bill for the mainstream civil service top-tier by around MK300 million and running a fleet of vehicles costing over K1 billion.

President Chakwera increased Cabinet portfolios from 18 to 23, adding five new PS positions. Additionally, the Ministry of Education now has two PSs—one for education and another for administration.

According to The Nation on Sunday, the Tonse administration also replaced six PSs, who have been deployed to the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) to handle “special duties” unknown. Some of them confided in us that they “literally do nothing” meaning they are getting paid for sitting around.

According to the Department of Human Resources Management and Development (DHRMD), each PS earns around MK22 million per annum, of which MK17 million is salary, and MK5 million fuel allowance.

Each PS is entitled to an official vehicle—a Prado TX valued between MK100 million and MK110 million—according to Toyota Malawi prices, meaning the 12 extra PSs have been designated a fleet valued at over MK1 billion.

“In simple terms, each ministry has one PS, who is the controlling officer. Their number can, therefore, be determined by the number of ministries. However, PSs are pegged at Grade C, and in government we have almost 44 officers at that Grade. But not all are PSs.

“DHRMD’s main area of focus is grades and numbers. But for the actual figures serving as PSs the OPC would be in a better position since they are responsible for deployment of PSs and other common administrative service,” DHRDM public relations officer Kennie Ntonga explained.

Speaking with the opposition party (DPP) spokesperson on Finance Joseph Mwanamvekha said “We are very worried and disappointed with the increased PSs. Manifesto of Malawi Congress Party promised to be efficient in utilization of funds. What is happening is contrary which is total negligence and total inefficiency”.

Mwanamvekha continued that at the time the country was struggling economically, the government was supposed to be cutting “unnecessary expenses.”

“Revenues are low and the government is struggling to provide quality services in sectors such as education, health and energy. It is shocking that the government has chosen to misuse resources,” he said.

Mwanamvekha said he was planning to meet the Ministry of Finance and Public Accounts Committee of Parliament to seek answers on the PSs growing numbers.

Economic analyst Milward Tobias said Malawi’s economy is too small for a “bloated PSs and Cabinet”.

“Most of those were appointed due to political connections. Instead of promoting civil servants that are already in the service, the trend here is that a new administration always brings in people that don’t have an idea how to be PSs,” he said.

Describing this as discriminatory and promoting unfair labour practices, The Office of the Ombudsman has questioned.

President Chakwera continues with unnecessary appointments for appeasing his Malawi Congress Party (MCP) loyalists, friends and family members.

MCP-Chakwera stop using Chewa tribe to score political mileage

By Gladys Dillah

I have seen a number of posts people talking bad about the Lhomwe and the Tumbukas and  sometimes the yaos- that ayao ndi anthu osaphunzira (Yaos are uneducated and brutes) but I haven’t seen officials from these ethnic groups responding to facebook or twitter.

But I am mesmerised with what Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Lazarus Chakwera is doing dividing the nation into the Chewas’ that support MCP.

A few weeks ago Chakwera paid the clergy to  make a ridiculous press announcement endorsing him against all odds.

All these with funding from the cashgate simply to become the President for this nation.

Who are you going to serve if you divide the nation way before you become president.? Is this the unity you preach about?

That you pay some cultural heritage of some ethnic groups become more superior than the other.? To openly stand and defend a party over a post that was on facebook?

How far do you want to go, to make it the state house.? You are going against everything you once stood for.

Chakwera is bringing chaos to Malawians both among the Christians and now the ethnic groups.

The MCP leader once told us not to trust liars but how can Malawians trust him.?

There was time when we heard you telling the nation that Former Malawi leader Joyce Banda (JB) should apologise to Malawian on  cashgate and the dubious deal of selling the presidential jet.

Today you  are numb on the subject why? Your Veep Sidik Mia in Salima told the gathering and the whole nation that Chakwera has nothing to do with corrupt leader because he doesn’t care.

Pastor Chakwera tell us the truth people want to hear from you. How much have you pocked the cash gate money from JB?

What is your share from the cash gate money?  Chakwera is destroying this nation before Malawians even vote for him.

Many people are asking Is MCP the chewa party? If so then some people from other tribes are just being used to win the election.

I believe my fellow Malawians who love this nation are not happy with what MCP has done sidelining other tribes in their party and declare to the nation that in MCP over 80% of MCP membership is made of the Chewas.

So what does that mean? You don’t need any other tribes to spoil your superior tribe that no one should talk bad things about MCP.?

Do we need such kind of leaders in Malawi?

MCP storms Mangochi’s Makanjira; Implores voters to vote for Chakwera

Chakwera taking the podium

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Lazarus Chakwera has urged people in Mangochi District to punish the current government by voting for MCP candidates beginning from president, legislators and councillors in order to enjoy massive development the party has weaved in its manifesto.

Chakwera said this at Mpilipili, Mangochi North Constituency, Traditional Authority (T/A) Makanjira in the district during the public rally it held to drum up the party’s support ahead of May 21 2019 tripartite elections.

Speaking to multitude that came to demystify the area’s long history of United Democratic Front (UDF) stronghold, the MCP president said time has come for people in the district to elect honest, visionary and development-wise leaders who will transform their lives.

“During the forthcoming elections, please vote for me and all the MCP candidates if you are get out of the stubborn poverty perpetrated by selfish and corrupt people who have failed to run the country. It’s time for people with clean track-record to turn around things,” he said.

Chakwera said he has a cream team as evidenced by his running mate, Sidik Mia who is well-experienced in politics and has the ability to change the country with those traits than the current leaders in government which are known of squandering tax payer’s money.

“If given a chance, our government will secure communities from boarder districts like Mangochi-Makanjira area from any torture to allow people enjoy their rights,” said the MCP hopeful, amid ululations from the audience.

He further added that MCP has plans to invest more in tourism centers in Mangochi district because of the district’s natural endowment of fresh water of Lake Malawi which attracts tourists.

Speaking earlier, People’s Party (PP) President Joyce Banda whose party made electoral alliance with MCP, urged people not to waste their time during the elections looking for corrupt leaders but rather settles for Chakwera because he is the only candidate holding a key to development.

“It’s high time we used our vote wisely to usher in corrupt free people and development conscious people. Chakwera deserves to be given a mandate of ruling this country to turnaround our situation. This is why I chose to support him,” said Banda, who is Malawi’s former president.

Of Chakwera’s irresponsible and insensitive statement on albino killings; Why wanting to end the vice only if voted into power

By Falles Kamanga

The leading opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Lazarus Chakwera  on Thursday assured  the nation of ending attacks on people with albinism within a month if voted into power during the May 21 elections

Chakwera told the news conference in the capital Lilongwe the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) administration has “miserably failed” to deliver on its socio-economic promises to Malawians and gave the DPP government low marks on the attacks of persons with albinism.

The MCP leader said the DPP promised security for all, but has to provide security for person with albinism and others who are attacked for political reasons.

Chakwera accused the Malawi Police Service (MPS) of failing to successfully investigate cases of abductions and killings of people with albinism.

The MCP leader hinted once again that  he cannot act now on albino abductions and killings until he is voted into power.

He shed crocodile tears as if he is concerned but is just playing the ceasar part in trying to work his way to get the presidential crown like Julius Caesar.

They are not waiting for more albinos to be abducted and killed as Chakwera is doing.

The MCP leader mentions the names of the people involved in albino killings but can not exclusively highlight how it is done. When..who buys..for what purpose?

These allegations are serious and  Chakwera must at once be true to what he says to reflect to what he was taught as a man of God

But he should know that this issue of albino killing is not and should not be politicised

This is an insensitive and irresponsible statement to come from a political leader. It exposes a number of things about Chakwera:

  1. That he knows who is abducting and killing albinos in Malawi but does not want to act because if the problem ends now, people will not have any reason to vote for him

  1. That he is a heartless man who is happy to see albinos being abducted and killed and won’t do anything about it unless he gains votes out of the killings

  1. That he does not want to work with some communities that have ganged up and stopped abductions and killings of albinos in their areas

  1. That he is a leader who puts votes ahead of the need to stop suffering of other people

  1. That he could be the one hiring or sponsoring people to abduct and kill people with albinism so as to create a situation where people see him as the one who could solve the problem once they vote him into power.

Malawians should reject such irresponsible leaders. There are many Malawians that are working hard to solve the problem now and they do so without aiming for profit like Chakwera is doing. Responsible leaders are acting NOW!

Chakwera promises to end albino attacks within a month in power

Chakwera on attack so persons with albinism

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The leading opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Lazarus Chakwera  on Thursday assured  the nation of ending attacks on people with albinism within a month if voted into power during the May 21 elections

“I will work with the Police, the Army, the Civil Society Organizations, National Intelligence Services, as well as the all Malawians to completely deal with the issues of albinism,” said Chakwera.

The MCP leader said he is deeply concerned by the rate at which attacks on persons with albinism continue to happen in the country and urged the President to fund the National Action Plan against killings and abduction of people with albinism.

He said the plan only needs MK3 billion but he was surprised that up to now the plan has not been funded when persons with albinism continue being killed and attacked, accusing authorities of choosing to do business as usual, with little or no urgency in their protection and response.

But Chakwera’s sentiments has attracted mixed reaction as to why Malawians should wait three months to elections to end the vice instead of handling it now.

Deal sealed: Chakwera names Mia as MCP running mate for 2019 elections

MANGOCHI-(MaraviPost)-The main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Lazarus Chakwera on Sunday named his second-in-command Mohammed Sidik Mia as the party’s  running mate for next year’s genera elections.

Chakwera told the Mtakataka-turn off ground in Mangochi political rally that the two have the ability to wrestle power from Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

The MCP President  who is also leader of opposition in Malawi Parliament  told the televised rally on Times that Mia will be his running mate.

“I will pair with Sidik Mia,” said Chakwera in post-rally interview with Times TV presenter Brian Banda which was live.

Chakwera becomes the first presidential contender to announce his running mate.

Added Chakwera: “When I am president, I will lead those that are Christians and those that are not because God loves everyone. There is nothing wrong with Sidik Mia, a Muslim, working together with me, a Christian.”

He however accused the DPP that has destroyed the hopes of Malawians so much in the last four years through its failure to build on its past campaign promises and crucially, through its corruption and cronyism.

“Malawians have suffered enough. If you want to terrorize or kill anyone, kill me, because Malawians have suffered enough,” said Chakwera.

Mia therefore expressed gratitude for the endorsement saying  he is humbled to be picked as running mate.

MCP’s leader Chakwera torn into pieces for shunning MAIIC launch

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Lazarus Chakwera has come under fire for shunning the launch of Malawi Agricultural and Industrial Corporation plc (MAIIC) on Wednesday.

President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika launched MAIIC at the Bingu International Convention Centre describing it as catalyst for private sector development.

The launch was patronized by chief executive officers from various private companies and institutions and ambassadors and High Commissioners, Speaker of the National Assembly among others.

Conspicuously missing was Leader of the Opposition Lazarus Chakwera who is also president of Malawi Congress Party.

Malawi Watch executive director Billy Banda described Chakwera as unpatriotic and an enemy of Malawians for not attending the launch.

“If Chakwera does not appreciate the coming of the Malawi Agricultural and Industrial Investment Corporation then he cannot claim to have the welfare of Malawians at heart. This corporation addresses poverty in the country. This is a milestone towards ending poverty,” said Banda.

He said Chakwera should not just be opposing anything just for the sake of it but give credit where it is due since he is also a Malawian.

The establishment of MAIIC is a groundbreaking partnership between goverment, the private sector and international investors to play a leading role as a catalyst for socio economic development, job and wealth creation in Malawi.

Malawi human rights activist Mayaya chickens out of live ZBS debate

By Nenenji Mlangeni
LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The self claimed human rights activist Billy Mayaya stunned Zodiak Broadcasting Station  (ZBS) Television viewers  on Sunday evening, as he faced the embarrassment  of his life when he ran away from a live hot debate on  talk show program “‘The Views Triangle’.
The debate was on “The Relevance or Irrelevance of CSOs and Demonstrations.”
Mayaya was taken foot-to-foot by President Peter Mutharika’s aide Mavuto Bamusi.
The anchor of the program, Chancy Muloza Banda asked whether the CSOs had aligned themselves to opposition parties when they allowed Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Lazarus  Chakwera to join and address the marchers, and by allowing the demonstrators to put on t-shirts that carried hate messges from vice president’s United Transformation Movement.
Mayaya was given a technical knock out when Bamusi insisted that the CSOs had sold themselves out to MCP, UTM, and Peoples Party who gave them a raw deal through the pitifully low turn out of marchers, and through the abuse of the demonstrations as a platform for hurling insults and hate speech.
Mayaya gave his final bow and prematurely walked out of the debate before time when Bamusi cornered him that the CSOs are no longer human rights defenders as they are now busy defending opposition political interests.
This turn of events left Zodiak with no choice but to end the program ten minutes before time as Bamusi could not go on to debate alone.

Mia calls for mass voters registration in Lilongwe as Chakwera set three day- tour

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Lazarus Chakwera  will on Thursday start a three day tour of Lilongwe district in a bid to sensitize the people to go and register for next year’s elections.

Since they got hold of the voter registration apathy news, MCP top leadership have been on the ground encouraging people in its stronghold of central region to go and register in masses.

Last week, Vice President Sidik Mia was on a two day tour of Nkhotakota district making a case on why people needed to go and register. Other MCP officials have also been moving up and down encouraging their people to go and register.

And it has paid dividends as the statistics for the second phase shows that over eighty percent of the targeted people registered in that phase. Perhaps knowing that the strategy is working, MCP has now gone full throttle to reach every nook and crook of Lilongwe district to encourage their people to go and vote.

“Day one tomorrow, MCP leadership will interact with people from Mpingu, Msundwe, Chileka, Namitete, Chawantha, Ng’onga-Ndaula, Phirlilanjuzi, Malingunde, Malili and Likuni.

“Day two, we will storm Dzenza, Chitukula, Mbang’ombe, Ngwangwa-Unit 6, Nsanama, Nsalu and Kabudula.

“And finally day three, we will storm Mchezi, Mthyoka-Nachiola, Mazengera, Matapila, Lundu-Mpeya, Chimbalanga, Chamadenga, Kamphata and Nathenje,” said Mia on his official Facebook page.

Mia said people should go and register in their large numbers so they can have an opportunity to usher into power “a caring government under the transformation leadership of Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Dr Lazarus Chakwera.”

On enticing the people to go and register, Mia disclosed that people who have already registered have told him that it is quick and easy to get registered.

“They say it is taking about 30 to 60 seconds. So let’s go and register. Remember the creed: Nothing for us without us. Let’s reboot the system next year. #OperationReboot2019,” Mia concluded his appeal.
