Malawi’s veteran journalist Felix Mponda succumbs to Covid-19

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—Malawi’s celebrated journalist, who has worked with different media houses of international repute including the Maravi Post,  has today Friday succumbed to Coronavirus disease (Covid-19) at the Queens Elizabeth Hospital in Blantyre.

According to family member Mike Mponda, late Felix Mponda tested positive few days ago after weeks of body pains.

“He has been feeling unwell for the past few weeks. A few days ago he tested positive for the coronavirus,” he said.

His body will be laid to rest tomorrow Saturday at Nancholi in Blantyre.

Mponda once worked for BBC, AFP, Times Group, Maravi Post and most recently MBC as an Online Editor.

He retired from MBC in December 2020.

His death comes barely a day after the passing on of MBC Radio 2 presenter Juliet Royo.

Mponda, a passionate journalist who wrote on on any subject under the sun, entered the newsroom in 1979.

He is survived by a wife and five children.

Mlakho wa Alomwe central region chapter plants 1,400 trees in Lilongwe

Central Region Chapter of Mlakho wa Alhomwe Saturday planted 1, 400 trees along Lilongwe River as a way of arresting environmental degradation due to rampant cutting of trees.

Speaking to Malawi News Agency (Mana) on the sidelines of the event, Central Region Chairperson, Frank Mazizi, said the grouping was concerned with use of trees to burn ovens, hoisting electricity poles and sand mining which has worsened environmental degradation.

Malawi artists call for establishment of art gallery

Malawian artists bemoan the lack of an art gallery in the country, a situation they say forces them to sell their work at scanty prices or hang their brushes for better paying jobs.

 

Speaking to Malawi News Agency (MANA) in separate interviews, the artists have since asked Government and concerned stakeholders, to establish an art gallery as one way of uplifting arts in the country.

 

“Finding a market for our work is not easy because very few people understand the value of art. As a result, they just go for anything cheaper, so long as it hangs on their walls,” said Blantyre-based Kenneth Namalomba. Continue reading Malawi artists call for establishment of art gallery

Over one thousand illegal immigrants arrested in Malawi from July 2016

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services announced that it has arrested a total of 1,247 illegal immigrants into Malawi from July 2016 to May 2017.

Speaking in an interview with the Malawi News Agency (MANA) on Tuesday, Deputy National Immigration and Citizenship Services Spokesperson, Wellington Chiponde, said the illegal immigrants were arrested for violating conditions of staying in the country.

MANA. Blantyre, May 30: The Department of Road Traffic and Safety Services (DRTSS), has denounced claims that it is harassing Muslim women when processing road traffic documents, and said the office operates within the laws of the country.

 

Recent social media reports highlighted concerns from some Malawians who felt the need for Muslim women to remove their head gear (Hijab) when taking pictures for their traffic documents, is harassment.
