Malawi Applied Science varsity’ first-year students chide union leaders for illegal money collection

By Chisomo Phiri

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-A group first-year students at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Science (MUBAS), formerly known as the Polytechnic have condemned the act of some leaders of Student Union at the University who allegedly collected money amounting to MK1,000 from each and every first year student without clearly giving the reason on what they will do with the money.

In an interview with one of the concerned students who is also a group leader Ezekiel Thipa disclosed that the union leaders collected the said amount of money from them during the first-day of their orientations at the school campus.

“They found us during the orientations and told each and everyone of us to pay MK1,000 of which we don’t its use at the school. They refused to tell us the purpose of the money as we don’t know if the school authorities are aware of this,” said Thipa.

Thipa said after rumours erupted at the school that the money was distributed among the leaders, they presented their grievances to Dean of Students for the truth whether the collection of MK1,000 from first-year Students was authorized by Dean’s office.

He said, the matter is still in the hands of Dean of Students who is to give them a feedback soon.

“We delivered our grievances to the Dean of the Students so as we hear from him whether this legal or not since the rumors are circulating on campus that the money was distributed among the leaders. We are waiting for him to give us a feedback,” he said.

Thipa said that if the school management will fail to handle their grievances in an honest way, the students will go to court to be helped, adding that some well-wishers have already pledged to finance them for court costs.

“We want the school management to intervene into this so as we know the truth. If the management fails, we will go to court to present our grievances for a help. This is a big case.

“The good thing is that some well-wishers have already pledged to finance us into the court of law if the school will not give desirable solution to such bad malpractice,” said Thipa.

Another female concerned student Esther Nyondo also confirmed of the development.

“Union leaders demanded MK1,000 from each of us which we don’t know its use. We have written a letter to Dean of Students to intervene into the matter so as we know the truth.

“The money might look small but the students are many,so if you can do the statics, you will find that the money is huge,” she confirmed.

But commenting on the matter, Student Union financial controller Noah Chadza whose name mentioned among those involved in the misconduct distanced himself from his involvement.

Chadza said he was not among the students who collected the money although he was around at the scene where the fraudulence happened.

“I was there where they were collecting money from the students but I was busy working with First Capital Bank where we were opening students’ accounts,” said Chadza.

He went on to describe the allegations that he involved in the swindling as just a basis of defamation.

According to Thipa, a statistical data of first year students who are claiming to have paid MK1,000 is increasing to more than 200, representing that more than MK200,000 was collected by the leaders.

Wastes Clarification App

By Chisomo Phiri

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The two final year students at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Science MUBAS), Blessings Mlundira and Towera Grace Banda have developed an artificial intelligence system called Project Deep Clean which is expected to address some of the environmental challenges that are currently affecting the global.

The project of the two was showcased at Faculty of Applied Science Symposium that held on campus last week.
According to Mlundira, the Project Deep Clean’s main objective is to achieve clean, health and sustainable environment.

“We are conducting research using deep learning artificial intelligence to combat some of the challenges faced in the environment. These issues also affect our health, so we are taking a stand to improve the quality of life by making the management of waste much easier and these solutions can be applied at industrial level and consumer applications”, said Mlundira.

He added that solutions which have been developed by project Deep Clean include an automatic waste clarification app which classifies different kinds of wastes in real time using cameras.

“We included a deep learning virtual assistance called Eliza so that people can interact with it at a deep human level and help spread environmental awareness messages and education using voice interactions, text, social media and phone calls”, added Mlundira.

The project deep clean uses deep learning artificial intelligence techniques to learn from data and solve challenges. It is a type of artificial intelligence which mimics the functionality of neutrons in the human brain using neural networks to perform intelligent behavior in machines. The system is able to classify different kinds of waste such as bio-degradable and non-degradable using cameras.

Mlundira further explained that When using the project deep clean, the user just need to take a picture of waste and the system do the rest work that include classifying and advising on how to manage the waste.

“We have also included an artificial virtual assistant called Eliza who you can talk to and communicate with like a real human. Eliza will help spread environmental awareness, educate people on environmental issues and answer questions concerning environment. She will also be available on social media platforms and phone calls. These solutions will be accessed on phones, laptops and currently being implemented on different machines and devices”, explained Mlundira.

Towera Grace Banda while in the middle is Dr. Mphatso Kamndaya (Faculty Dean) and Blessings Mlundira

On his part, the Dean of Faculty in the faculty of Applied Science Dr. Mphatso Kamndaya congratulated the two for coming up with an innovative idea which will help combating environmental challenges hence reducing climatic challenges.

MUBAS campus

By Chisomo Phiri

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Concerned Students Movement (CSM), a movement that fights for  students’ good conditions and welfare at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Science (MUBAS) formerly the Polytechnic  has challenged the school management that it will hold kodokodo demonstrations to force the school management improve the living conditions which it says are in a bad state.

Speaking with this publication, the leader of the movement Peters Monjeza said there are a lot of challenges that the students most especially the needy are  facing at the institution which need a quick solution so as to make education quality for all.

Among other challenges, Monjeza said the management is failing to handle accommodation issues as  it has introduced a new system of selecting students to be accommodated on the campus where only a certain group of students  are selected all the  time leaving others suffering.

“The management has introduced a new system authenticate fairness when selecting students on campus hostels but what we see is not the said fairness. The out numbered students who were given the accommodation last semester are the same who have been also given the accommodation this semester to begin in January next year  yet we have many students who have never enjoyed the accommodation since selected at the school. Others are in third year and others are finishing but they have never stayed at the no campus, is that fairness?”, he said.

Monjeza also blamed the government to stop providing free meals ( meal cut) to the students in public universities and colleges  saying this is  now contributing to poor quality of education in the country and that the government should in hurry revise the decision before things get much worse.

He said  if the management is not  addressing  the challenges, the movement is well prepared to hold the demonstrations at the campus  in January next year .

Malawi University of Business and Applied Science has over 7000 students  of which only 850 are those who have been offered accommodation in the next semester to begin in January, 2022.
