Pregnancies, marriages claim 195 Zomba girls’ school places

ZOMBA-(MaraviPost)-At least 195 young girls from Zomba Malosa constituency dropped out of school last year alone due to pregnancy or early marriages, according to Parliamentarian for the area, Grace Kwelepeta.

Kwelepeta made the claim on Thursday when Minister of Gender, Mary Navicha, officially launched a girls’ academy at Dreams of Children Family in Zomba, highlighting the need for urgent action.

Senior Chief Malemia of the district said his office is verifying the figures together with his chiefs and parents, but assured that they will support any initiative to protect girls and have a proper channel of reporting such incidents.

The traditional leader’s commitment to addressing the issue is seen as a significant step towards curbing the vice and ensuring girls’ education is prioritized.

Navicha said the facility is a huge step in securing the girl child’s future in the area, and described the dropping out of school figures as sad as reported by the parliamentarian and demand a quick intervention.

The minister’s remarks underscore the government’s commitment to addressing the issue of child marriages and promoting girls’ education.

Dreams of Children Family founder, Mahmud Ensari Caymaz, says they are providing free formal and informal education, currently supporting over 300 girls, and the academy will offer free boarding for around 40 girls.

The initiative is expected to have a positive impact on the lives of many girls in the area, providing them with a chance to pursue their education without interruption.

By Twink Jones Gadama

In a Facebook post, Honorable Mary Thom Navicha, Member of Parliament and National Director of Women for the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), addressed the viral news of her purported arrest.

Navicha clarified that while her name is reportedly on the list of individuals to be arrested, she has not been taken into custody.

Navicha recounted her busy day, attending parliamentary meetings and waiting in line for fuel, which led to her phone shutting off.

Upon waking up, she was alarmed to find news of her arrest circulating on social media.

“I was so alarmed when I woke up to see news of my purported arrest,” Navicha stated. “I want to assure the public that I am safe and sound.”

Navicha emphasized her willingness to cooperate with authorities, stating, “Should Malawi Police formally invite me for questioning at whatever police station, I personally will go there to hand in myself and everyone will know.”

This clarification comes amidst rumors and speculation surrounding potential arrests of high-profile individuals in Malawi.

As a prominent figure in Malawi’s political landscape, Navicha has been instrumental in advocating for women’s rights and empowerment.

Navicha’s Facebook post garnered widespread attention, with many expressing relief and support.

The Malawi Police have not officially commented on the reported list of individuals to be arrested.

As the situation unfolds, Navicha’s assurance of cooperation and transparency is crucial in maintaining public trust.

DPP earmarks Mary Navicha for Leader of Oppositon in Parliament

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has submitted to the speaker of the national assembly the name of Mary Thom Navicha as the new Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in parliament.

Speaker of the National Assembly Catherine Gotani Hara has confirmed receiving the submission but says she is currently consulting before confirming Navicha as the new leader of the opposition.

The move is being perceived as a DPP strategy to remove the fired DPP member and former vice president for the southern region, Kondwani Nankhumwa, from the position.

Nankhumwa has come to the position of challenging the eligibility of Dr. George Chaponda as his successor in the wake of an injunction obtained by some legislators in June 2022.

If approved, Navicha will be the first Malawi’s Leader of Opposition in Parliament.

However, inside sources disclosed that although the DPP had chosen Navicha to replace Nankhumwa there’s a court injunction that 22 Members of Parliament (MPs) sought against Chaponda which will also affect Navicha’s appointment.

This, therefore, renders the tactical withdrawal of Chaponda’s name “dead on arrival”.

Nankhumwa will still be the leader of the opposition until the injunction is vacated.

DPP Thyolo-Thava primaries marred with violence, intimidation; contestants demands results nullification

THYOLO-(MaraviPost)-Political violence resurfaced on Sunday when the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) cadets intimidated contestants in Thyolo-Thava Constituency during the party’s primaries which left one injured and others pulling out of the elections.

Sources privy the incident to Maravi Post disclosed that the incumbent parliamentarian, Mary Thom Navicha who has lost popularity in the area is allegedly hired roughnecks to intimidate fellow contestants.

During the primaries one of the aspiring DPP Councillors, Pauline Kanyoza expressed her dissatisfaction with the way the primaries were being conducted.

She questioned whether the 50-50 campaign that is being advocated for really makes sense when a fellow woman is in the forefront of instigating terror to other women.

This did not go well with Navicha and soon Kanyoza was roughed up by DPP zealots leaving her with a torn dress.

“I was trying to reason with Navicha that the 50-50 Campaign advocates that women and men should have equal space on political scene. Now it is unheard of for the same campaigners to do otherwise.

“A lot of people have pulled out of these primaries because of gross flaws in the electoral process of these primaries and for that I was beaten up,” lamented Kanyoza.

Livingstone Mazinga another aspirant lawmaker for the constituency told this paper that DPP Thyolo Regional Office flouted procedures for conducting the primaries.

“Everyone knows that standard procedure in the party allows that there should be free flow of information to all contestants. From the word go information has been deliberately withheld to disadvantage others.

“For instance, We knew that primaries will be held after Parliament rise, but to our surprise party officials were called on Saturday to collect forms and barely 24 hours elections were set which shows that these are deliberate tactics that are not allowed in a democratic dispensation and that’s why I pulled out and have written the DPP Regional Office that the primaries results be nullified and there should be a proper re-run,” said Mazinga.

George Umali the duly elected Constituency Governor for Thyolo-Thava who was unceremoniously removed from his position calls on the DPP leadership to investigate how party affairs are being run in the district.

Umali observed that DPP is losing popularity due to a few selfish individuals who are running the party as a personal estate.

He adds his weight to nullify the primaries’ result and level the stage for a fresh free and fair election.

Rifred Nawena, former Parliamentarian for the constituency also pulled out of the primaries citing serious flaws.

Efforts to talk to Chimwemwe Chipungu, Organising secretary for the primaries proved futile as he could not pick our calls.
