ZOMBA-(MaraviPost)-At least 195 young girls from Zomba Malosa constituency dropped out of school last year alone due to pregnancy or early marriages, according to Parliamentarian for the area, Grace Kwelepeta.
Kwelepeta made the claim on Thursday when Minister of Gender, Mary Navicha, officially launched a girls’ academy at Dreams of Children Family in Zomba, highlighting the need for urgent action.
Senior Chief Malemia of the district said his office is verifying the figures together with his chiefs and parents, but assured that they will support any initiative to protect girls and have a proper channel of reporting such incidents.
The traditional leader’s commitment to addressing the issue is seen as a significant step towards curbing the vice and ensuring girls’ education is prioritized.
Navicha said the facility is a huge step in securing the girl child’s future in the area, and described the dropping out of school figures as sad as reported by the parliamentarian and demand a quick intervention.
The minister’s remarks underscore the government’s commitment to addressing the issue of child marriages and promoting girls’ education.
Dreams of Children Family founder, Mahmud Ensari Caymaz, says they are providing free formal and informal education, currently supporting over 300 girls, and the academy will offer free boarding for around 40 girls.
The initiative is expected to have a positive impact on the lives of many girls in the area, providing them with a chance to pursue their education without interruption.
