Police in Mzuzu have arrested seven individuals suspected of being involved in a series of robbery incidents and murder in Mzuzu City.
According to Maurice Chapola, spokesperson for the Northern Region Police, the suspects are accused of hacking to death a guard and injuring several others during the robberies.
The robberies targeted lodges, foreign nationals, and high-profile individuals.
Chapola has urged the public to join hands with the police in creating a safe city by reporting suspicious individuals and activities.
The police have been investigating the incidents, and Chapola has expressed optimism that the arrests will lead to a reduction in crime in the area.
He also emphasized that the police will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that the city is safe for everyone.
The suspects are currently in police custody and will appear in court soon to face charges.
The police have recovered some stolen items, including electronics and other valuables.
The community has been advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
The police have assured the public of their commitment to providing a safe and secure environment for all.
Indian national Anand-Mandivar fined K700, 000 for calling Malawian “a dog”
Mzuzu Senior Resident Magistrate Court has ordered an Indian national Anand-Mandivar to compensate Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) Northern region chairperson Happy Mhango with K700, 000.00 for calling him “a dog.”
Giving his ruling earlier today, Chief Resident Magistrate Godfrey Nyirenda gave a three months suspended sentence to Mandivar, but opted for fine as Mandivar is a first offender.
Mandivar was arrested on Tuesday by Mzuzu Police.
The incident happened at Kentam Mall in Mzuzu where the two were seeking services from a mobile phone operator.
According to Mzuzu Police, Mandivar did not want to join the queue but to bypass everyone who was there, a behaviour that prompted the rights activist to intervene by asking the Indian national to respect others.
In retaliation, Mandivar hulled insults at the innocent Malawian.
Mzuzu-(MaraviPost)—Police in the Northern City of Mzuzu have said they are ready to help citizens in the city and other surrounding areas enjoy the festive season by preventing crimes such as robberies, defilement and drunk driving.
Speaking on Tuesday during an interactive meeting with the media in Mzuzu, General Duties Officer (GDO) II for Mzuzu Police Station, Superintendent Benson Mtajiri, said as police, they know that during Christmas and New Year festivities, there is an increase in crimes and so they are prepared to embark on foot and vehicle patrols; among other measures, to ensure the general public celebrate the season peacefully.
“Let me assure you that the police has put everything in order to ensure that this Christmas and New Year festive season is prosperous and free of crime. In order to achieve this, as the police, we have employed various strategies – some of which we have already shared with you. But the most important of these are: we have intensified both foot and vehicle patrols both during night and day; during this period, we have deployed uniformed and non uniformed police officers and some intelligence officers on the ground – preferably in hotspot areas to ensure that we are free from crime,” said Mtajiri.
Superintendent Mtajiri also revealed that Mzuzu Police Station will soon reopen police units which were razed down by angry rioters last year during the anti government demonstrations.
On his part, Chairperson of Nyika Media Club (NMC), a grouping of journalists in the northern region, Joseph Mwale, assured the police of good working relationship between the two in order to have a crime free city and also work hand in glove with them in disseminating key information to the general public as regards crime prevention during the celebratory season and onwards.
Mwale said: “Generally speaking, we have had some good relationship with the police. The media and the police have interacted quite well. Of course there are a few incidences where there is seemingly some form of crashing in the way that the media and the police operate; especially during the previous period when we had numerous demonstrations; but in terms of how we fare, generally speaking, the police have been able to engage the media and when we require information, we are able to get it from them.”
Mwale further hinted that as media, they will help the police in ensuring that Mzuzu City and other surrounding areas are made crime free through proper information dissemination.
The police admitted that during festive season, there is an alarming increase in crime rate; hence their preparation as preventive policing which falls under the Malawi Police Service five year strategic plan.
Police in Mzuzu have expressed concern over frequent road accidents involving children . Police have asked parents and guardians to ensure that children do not play on and along the roads.
Mzuzu Police Station Prosecution Officer, Betty Msowoya, was speaking in Mzuzu High Court during hearing of a case involving a 12-year-old boy. The boy was crushed to death by a rear wheel of a Scania Truck registration number BQ 9405 in Chibavi Township.
‘It is my plea to the parents and guardians to strictly warn their children to abstain from boarding unknown moving vehicles out of excitement. This is one of the major cause of road accidents.” she said.
The driver of the vehicle, Thomson Tembo, was charged with the offence of causing death by reckless driving contrary to Section 126 (c) of Malawi Road Traffic Act.
Tembo pleaded guilty to the charge and was convicted. He was asked to pay a fine of K150, 000 or in default spend six months in jail. He paid the fine.
Tembo, 36, comes from Mdima Village in Traditional Authority (T.A.) Mtwalo in Mzimba District while the deceased, Mwayi Chisambula, came from Malema Village in the area of T.A. Kyungu in Karonga.
Meanwhile, Msowoya has revealed that Mzuzu Police Station intends to conduct awareness campaigns to sensitize people in the city on accident prevention.
A 35 year old man Bright Ngwira, was on Wednesday killed by an angry mob at Mchengautuwa location in Mzuzu.
Mzuzu police deputy spokesperson Cecilia Mfune, confirmed to The Maravi Post and described the deceased as a suspected and well-known criminal in the area.
According to Mfune, the deceased was found stealing ladies church uniforms and other items which were stored at a certain house close to Target Private School within the city of Mzuzu.
“Before meeting his fate, the suspect was being taken to Mchengautuwa police unit by some community members, however, while on their way, the suspect was attacked by an angry mob who assaulted and killed him,” said Mfune.
She said postmortem result which was conducted by a medical personnel at Mzuzu Central Hospital revealed that death was due loss of blood.
The body of the deceased is being kept at Mzuzu Central Hospital mortuary according to Mfune, while the police are looking for his relatives.
No arrest has been made in connection to the development.
However, the Mzuzu deputy spokesperson has advised the community to refrain from mob justice as it jeopardizes police investigations.
Bright Ngwira comes from Lusani Village, Traditional Authority Chikulamayembe in Rumphi District.
MZUZU-(MaraviPost) – A 34 year old man is in police custody in the green city of Mzuzu for allegedly murdering his fellow man.
Mzuzu deputy police spokesperson Cecilia Mfune has identified the suspect as Mike Banda while the deceased as Precious Mwale, 30.
Man arrested for murder
Mfune told the Maravi Post that Banda is suspected to have committed the crime on Saturday after he was found with a shirt and cell phone of the deceased.
The police publicist further added that suspect’s t-shirt was found at the scene of crime hence his arrest in the connection of the Mwale’s death.
“The deceased wife on January 14, 2017 told the police that her husband left home for Zambia for greener pastures. She however got information on January 15, that her husband was found dead along Kadambo Stream at Dunduzu area.
“Police investigations led to the arrest of Banda who was found with a shirt and cell phone of the deceased. Furthermore suspect’s t-shirt was found at the scene of crime.
“The deceased’s head and legs were chopped off. Currently, the suspect is in Police cell waiting to appear before court soon to answer murder charge contrary to section 209 of the penal code”, said Mfune.
The suspect Banda hails from Kapichi Village Tradition Authority (T.A) Kapichi in Thyolo district while the deceased, Mwale originated from Makhalala Village, T.A Wimbe in Kasungu district.
MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi court on Wednesday moved the victims to the crime scene at Lusangazi Lodge in Mzuzu to testify against the main opposition councilor for Chabanja ward Charles Mlongera in the city.
The move was part of the court’s proceedings in the matter where it is alleged that Councillor Mlogera accommodated three teenage girls and thereafter took turns to defile them on the night of October 8 this year.
Kamlongera likely to answer three counts of defilement
Mzuzu Police Station deputy spokesperson Cecilia Mfune told The Maravi Post that the three victims narrated to the court at the scene how the suspect, who was present, drove his vehicle to the lodge in company of the girls and the actual place where he packed his car.
The Police Publicist Mfune said the trio also showed the court the room and the bed where the offence is alleged to have been committed.
Mfune however disclosed that Chief Resident Magistrate Major Mbewe adjourned the case to January 20, 2017 for ruling on whether Mlogera has a case to answer.
“Indeed, the Chief Resident Magistrate Court in Mzuzu today, December 28, 2016 moved to Lusangazi Lodge where it is alleged that Councillor Mlogera accommodated three teenage girls and thereafter took turns to defile them on the night of October 8 this year”, confirmed Mfune.
Currently, the suspect, Mlogera is out on court bail which was granted by Mzuzu High Court Judge Dingiswayo Madise three weeks ago.
Mlogera is allegedly to have made the three girls drunk beer at a drinking joint before booking a room at a lodge where he managed to defile each one of the girls; two aged 16 and one aged 15.
Councilor Charles Mlogera who hails from Kanjati village, Traditional Authority (TA Kwataine in Ntcheu district, is likely to answer three counts of defilement contrary to section 138 of the Penal Code.
MZUZU-(MaraviPost)–Police in Mzimba have arrested two men for allegedly swindling money amounting to K22 million from the parents using a fake Non-Governmental Organization (NGO).
Confirming the development, Mzuzu police deputy spokesperson Cecelia Mhone identified the two as a 31-year old Harold Saka from Chimizimizi village, Traditional Authority Mtwalo in Mzimba and Thomas Nyirenda, 41 years old, of Thambalala village in the area of Traditional Authority Katumbi in Rumphi district.

According to Mhone, the two have been deceiving the community that they own an NGO that gives the scholarship to secondary school students in corroboration with the Minister of Gender.
She said the suspects were therefore obtaining K35, 000 from each parent as registration fee.
“As of this term only, the two enrolled 700 students in different private secondary school here under the program,” said Mhone.
Mhone said the failure of the two through their NGO to pay the school fees for the students raised eyebrows of both parents and school owners.
“The two concerned parties reported the matter to the police and it’s when we arrested the suspects,” she disclosed.
The Mzuzu police deputy spokesperson said the suspects have also outstanding fees balance amounting to K55 million in different private secondary schools.
Meanwhile, the two are expected to appear before the court soon to answer the charges of obtaining money by pretense which contrary is to section 219 (1) of the country’s penal code.
