LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-In an unexpected development for Malawi’s music industry, renowned writer and communications specialist 36-year-old Dyson Mthawanji has released a love song entitled Tiye in which he has featured the powerful and most loved female musician, Sangie of Mayi Wangiro fame.
Talking to Maravi Post from his base in Malawi’s capital city Lilongwe, Mthawanji whose music name is Mr. Dyson said he was born with interest in music but it was just a matter of time to show music lovers that he is also capable of composing a song.
Mthawanji is well known in the country for his contribution to fiction writing as he has written hundreds of English and Chichewa short stories. He is also a poet. Recently, Mthawanji who hails from Mpanang’ombe village, Traditional Authority Nthondo in Ntchisi District, published a book entitled Chiphadzuwa cha Usiku. Therefore, it is strange among arts followers to wake up with news that he has recorded and released a song.
“I’m speechless. I didn’t know that we have a powerful musician in Dyson Mthawanji. Where was he all this time? I have listened to his new song and I am really speechless. The song is so great that it will be people’s forgettable gift for the music lovers across the country,” said one of the Lilongwe music fans.
When Maravi Post contacted Mthawanji whose music name is Mr. Dyson, he said there is a thin line between fiction writing and music composition.
“It may sound strange for many people. But for people who studied with me in Ntchisi and Nkhotakota will tell you that I used to sing during school events. Even when I was at The Polytechnic [now MUBAS), I used to sing in front of my fellow students. I have been composing short stories and poems so it is easy for me to compose a song too,” said Mthawanji.
In the song which was produced by Sispence of Matrix Records at Chirimba in Blantyre, Mthawanji sings:
Moni moni agogo kumudziko / Nanga muli bwanji?
Nthenda ya umbeta ndinachira / Mtera ndi mkaziyu
Ondikodola chulukirenji / Koma uyu ndi mbambande
Sangie’s voice settles well in the chorus and the second verse. On why he chose Sangie, he said he always adores Sangie’s talent. He salutes Sangie as an artist who has great future in music. “Her talent is beyond Malawi; she deserves an international platform. I always go for great things that’s why I chose Sangie to stand shoulder to shoulder with me in this song,” said Mthawanji.
Mthawanji studied Bachelor of Arts in Journalism at The Polytechnic and later studied Marketing with Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM).
He says he believes in implementing whatever he feels is good. “My mind is always creative. We have short period on the Earth therefore we should implement all our dreams,’ he said.
Currently, Mthawanji and Sangie are working on the video for the song which will be released soon. Sangie has done a lot of songs such as I do it for love, Confusion and Mayi wangiwiro. On 1st December she released three songs under the banner of Matrix namely SNS, Undibwezere and Zinthu Zake.
According to the comments on the social media, Malawians have welcomed Mthawanji’s song with both hands and are waiting for the video with bated breath.
