Livingstonia Synod pledges advisory support to Chakwera Govt

Livingstonia Synod General Secretary, Reverend Levi Nyondo

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-The CCAP Synod of Livingstonia has promised to keep providing advisory support to the new government as part of its responsibilities.

Speaking on Monday during a post election celebration held at the Synod’s headquarters in Mzuzu, the General Secretary for the Synod, Reverend Levi Nyondo, said Malawians should give the new government at least a month to settle down and begin to implement its manifesto.

“We are celebrating because when we compare countries where elections have been done, in Malawi, this has been a special one because it has been done peacefully. So, it is biblical. So, that’s why we are celebrating.

“We have a new President. It’s like having a new wife. First month is for pieces of advice. He will not perform well unless we give him direction and pieces of advice, above all, prayers. So, we shouldn’t expect the fruits the same week, no. When you plant a plant, you wait for the fruits to come. So, this time is like a honeymoon period for him,” said Nyondo

Reverend Nyondo further said he expects the new president to rise above tribalism and regionalism for the sake of development of the country.

Echoing similar sentiments was Reverend Timothy Nyasulu who is the General Assembly moderator for the three Synods of Livingstonia, Nkhoma and Blantyre. Reverend Nyasulu said the role of the Synod is to be a partner in development.

Nyasulu said: “As a church, we are there to see that the leadership is doing good work. If there is no good work that is going to take place, definitely, they also know that the church will come and voice out. And as church leader, that’s my role. We work with government as partners in development but there are issues that we need to discuss, definitely, we will come out and say something is not going on well. So, definitely, my role is that of pastoral as well as prophetic.”

On June 23, 2020, Malawians went to fresh presidential polls after the Constitutional Court order a rerun of the same due to a maladministration of May, 2019 tripartite elections.

Chakwera emerged the winner of the polls defeating the then President Peter Mutharika.

Dr Chakwera is now the sixth President of Malawi.
