Week end in Review: Malawi@50 Celebrations in Malawi, Washington DC and London

M Cinema in Lilongwe will this July 05 premier a movie from Nigeria titled “My life in Nollywood”. Highlights of the day will be the patrons chance of a photo opportunity with Nigeria based Award winning actor Alex Fredrick Chinwe. The movies screening with start at 2pm. 

July 05 is the day when Men desiring to star in the 2014 big brother Africa will be interviewed in Lilongwe. The men who know that they have the flare, enthusiasm and charisma should contact Multi Choice Malawi. 

 Airtel Malawi 50th anniversary theme song and video Mwezi Wawala, will be launched on July 05 at Limbe Country Club. Artists like Piksy, Ethel Kamwendo, Lulu, will grace the occasion. Performing both the theme song and dishing out their best. 

Malawi @50 Celebrations:

As Malawi Celebrates the 50th anniversary a movie and news service provider Multichoice has organized an Independence bash to be held at Sunbird Livingstonia in Salima. Some of the climax of the occasion will be music by award winning artist Lucius Banda, Lulu and Musician from Zambia will grace the occasion. Songs from when Malawi attained independence like cool and the gang to songs being played now of the likes of Beyoncé will be played by renowned DJ Scapper. Kids too will be given treats and there will be a fashion show by the beach.

Malawi@50 Washington DC Celebrations 

The event, “Malawi at 50 – Golden Jubilee” will take place in the Washington D.C. metro area from 4th-6th July, 2014. During these three days, Malawians plan to not only celebrate but and empower the hundreds of Malawians coming to this golden jubilee celebration with information incorporated in the programs planned for the weekend.

Events planned for the weekend include a concerts by local and national Malawian artists, a family picnic, fashion show and a soccer tournament against teams from Kenya, Zimbabwe and Liberia. The highlight of the weekend is a community discussion forum and a Dinner and Dance.

The aim of the forum is to engage the community in issues that are pertinent to Malawians and Diaspora Malawians. The Dinner and Dance will celebrate the auspicious occasion with music, entertainment, dance, and cuisine from Malawi. It will also feature internationally renowned Malawian designers Lilly Alfonso and Mwai Namaona of Nzika Wear who will be appearing for the frist time in the United States. Also on the line–up are up and coming designers Dorothy Nsona of Dorovee Designs and Diaspora Malawian Cellina Mlusu. The musical guests include Malawi’s hottest artists Lawi and Maskal who will appear in the U.S for the first time as well as Diaspora Malawian reggae bands Indika and Lungu Vybz.

The official representatives of Malawi will be the special guests at this event. The weekend will wrap up with a community prayer at St. Pauls Methodist Church and a Farewell/Independence Day luncheon at Swahili Village restaurant. Malawi will be the special guests at this event. The theme for the weekend is “Malawi of yesterday, today and tomorrow”. The aim of the weekend is to provide a central location where Malawians can come together in celebration and reflection. Malawi@50 UK Celebrations

CDH Investment Bank will offer an opportunity to all Malawians in the diaspora to open their accounts and is expected to visit Bedford, Luton, Leicester, Birmingham, Nottingham, Manchester and Scotland to extend the opportunities of opening accounts to the diaspora.

During the events CDH will have a desk for the same purposes.

Other events include two Fundraising events on July 4, 2014, Malawi Night at Commonwealth Secretariat in support of Malawi Health Care Services and Malawi Turns 50 at Kingston College in aid of African Vision Malawi who are building a Village Polytechnic in Lilongwe North.

On July 6 there are prayers at Christ Church in Leamington Spa followed by a Garden Party, while the following day Westminster Abbey will host Malawi Evensong Prayers. On the 12th July, 2014, David Livingstone Centre in Blantyre Scotland will host Malawi @50 in Scotland which will include football. Barbecue and family events.

The events with end with Malawi@50 Thanksgiving Prayers at the Malawi House (High Commission) in London led by Malawi Women Association United Kingdom on the 19th. 

Malawi@50 Celebrations headed by VP Chilima

Vice president Saulos Chilima, who is responsible for public events,  told a presser in Lilongwe on Friday that the party will kick-off with an interdenominational service of worship at Bingu International Conference Centre before the other activities will be staged at Civo Stadium where there will be a joint Parade by the Malawi Defence Force (MDF), Malawi Police Service (MPS), Malawi Prison Service (MPS) and the Immigration Department. 

Guests from Africa and Britain-the former colonial power which handed over independence to Malawi in 1964 with Dr Kamuzu Banda as the the country’s first prime minister and later president- have been invited.

The Climax Malawi Flames will play an international friendly football match against Mozambique’s Mambas as part of July 6 Independence Celebrations.

Football Association of Malawi general secretary Suzgo Nyirenda said the strength testing match would be part of Flames preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Benin.

Nyirenda also disclosed that after the friendly against Mamba’s, the Flames would play another friendly before facing Benin.
