Mulanje, January 7: While criminal activities continue scaring people in some parts of the country, Police in Mulanje have said the district registered a 15 percent reduction in criminal activities in 2014.
Mulanje Police publicist James Kadadzera attributed the reduction to intensive patrols by the men and women in uniform.
“In 2014 we had a total of 1896 criminal cases that were reported whilst in 2013, 2218 cases were registered, this to us means a lot as all our efforts that we made to reduce criminal cases in the district are seen to be bearing fruits”.
The decrease, according to Kadadzera, was due to intensive vehicle and foot patrols the police mounted, but also to tips from the general public that led to arrests of alleged culprits.
However, Kadadzera said murder cases increased to 32 in 2014 from 15 in 2013.
Cases that decreased in 2014 included those on defilement which went down from 37 in 2013 to 25 in 2014 and burglary which decreased from 267 in 2013 to 234 in 2014.
Kadadzera then promised that the police would continue with patrols to make sure that criminal activities continued to decrease in the district.
