Lilongwe, January 7: Malawi Police Inspector General Paul Kanyama has advised police officers in the country to exercise regularly in order to maintain their physical fitness which is crucial in their work.
He said physically fit officers would easily effect an arrest without using a gun.
He gave an example of a police officer in Chiradzulu who apprehended a man who wanted to rob him of his bicycle.
“A criminal wanted to rob one of our officers in Chiradzulu by threatening him with a knife, but he was able to apprehend him because he was physically fit.
“I can outrun some of you in spite of my age. I have been in the service for 35 years, but I am still very fit,” he advised.
The IG also promised that outstanding officers would be rewarded to motivate them.
The IG made the remarks on Monday when he officially handed over five vehicles to Lilongwe Police Station and its surrounding zones towards the revival of rapid response unit (990).
