Malawi police arrest fleeing bank robbery suspect

BLANTYRE (Maravipost)–Malawi Police in border district of Mwanza on Sunday intercepted and arrested Perekani Malunga, the main suspect in the K100 million robbery at First Merchant Bank in Blantyre, for attempting to flee the country for South Africa through Mwanza border post.

Malunga, who was arrested alongside his friend identified as 38 year-old Chikondi Kenneth, reportedly attempted to flee the country on public transport using a suspected forged South African passport number AO 2092624 under the name Peter Daubanes born in Australia, according to Mwanza Police spokesperson, Victoria Chirwa.

Malunga used the passprt to cross the border and had to be chased by immigration officials after being alerted he was on police wanted list.

Nine people were arrested in connection with this robbery case where a police officer on duty was killed and another seriously wounded.

Malunga comes from Musa village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Machinjiri in Blantyre while Kenneth hails from Kalungwe village, T/A Likoswe in Chiradzulu district.
