Malawi Govt inaugurates transparency week campaign for good governance promotion

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Government has inaugurated transparency week campaign week in a bid to promote good governance in public institutions.

This is part of the country’s world Open Government Partnership week (OGP) celebration aimed at strengthening roles that oversight accountability and transparency in from both public and civil society organisations.

During official opening of OGP week in the capital Lilongwe on Monday, May 27, 2024 Minister of Mining, Monica Chang’anamuno said the week has specific thematic areas including anti-corruption , digital governance and open Parliament.

The commemoration runs from May 27 to 31, 2024.

Chang’anamuno said Malawi joined the grouping in 2022, “The country has managed to enhance oversight role of Parliament focusing on government.

“The meeting will help strengthen scrutiny of public finance management laws focusing on transparency and accountability on strategies that are laid in this nation”.

In her remarks ,Deputy Secretary to the president and cabinet,Janet Banda said Malawi is hosting the event for the first time and it is the sixth of it’s kind within OGP family.

Banda said, “Under the anti-corruption thematic area we believe that the deployment of open contracting and beneficial ownership is transparent and making government sincere , transparent and accountable.

She added that parliament thematic area is to make significant strides in ensuring that public accounts committee scrutinize money bills to promote transparency and checks and balances on government borrowing.

“Government needs to lead in this space by ensuring that service delivery is efficient and effective at the same time ensuring that public servants remain transparent and accountable,” said Banda.

This year OGP week is under the theme “Promoting transparency accountability and citizen engagement”.
