LUSAKA-(MaraviPost)-The nation of Zambia is in mourning following the passing of former First Lady, Maureen Mwanawasa, at the age of 60.

Her demise was confirmed by her nephew and family spokesperson, Stanley Kakubo, who described her death as “untimely” and a cause for “deepest and profound sadness”.

Maureen Mwanawasa, a lawyer by profession, left an indelible mark on Zambia’s political landscape during her tenure as First Lady from 2001 to 2008.

Her husband, the late President Levy Patrick Mwanawasa, ruled the country during this period, and Maureen was seen as a powerful and supportive figure in his administration.

After her husband’s passing in 2008, Maureen attempted to carve out her own political path, contesting the Lusaka mayoral seat on the UPND ticket in the 2016 general election.

Although she lost to PF’s Wilson Kalumba, her foray into politics demonstrated her willingness to take on new challenges.

In recent years, Maureen led a relatively quiet political life, focusing on her law practice.

However, her 60th birthday celebration last April made headlines when she got baptized at Twin Palm Baptist Church in Lusaka, marking a significant milestone in her spiritual journey.

Maureen’s legacy extends beyond her political achievements.

She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, and aunt, and her passing leaves a void in the lives of those who knew and loved her.

As Zambia mourns the loss of this trailblazing former First Lady, her contributions to the country’s political and social landscape will not be forgotten.

The funeral gathering is currently underway at her residence in Roma Park, with more details to be announced in due course.

As the nation bids farewell to Maureen Mwanawasa, her memory will continue to inspire future generations of Zambian leaders and citizens alike.
