The Malawi Washington Association is one of the oldest Diaspora organizations, founded in 1994 by Peter Kapakasa, Stafford Chipungu, Jonathan Kamkwalala and the late Henri Nsanjama.

These four Malawians aimed at forming an organization that not only united the growing number of Malawians in the District of Columbia, Virginia, and Maryland, but also the growing number of Malawians in the host countries of the United States of America and Canada. Currently, the organization has over a hundred members and a number of supporters both in and out of the Malawian community.

Since its Inception MWA has consoled and assisted Malawians in the US. They have raised and supported charity and relief operations in Malawi. As recent as this year they raised relief funds for Malawians affected by the floods.

The Malawi Washington Association has worked well with all Ambassadors that have assumed the post in DC. At one time the organization banded together to clean up the Malawi Embassy which was located in an appalling building.
