LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The much awaited democratic governance think-tank under the banner Civil Society Elections Integrity Forum (CSEIF) is born in a bid to track down and taking accountability on politicians promises for positions during general elections.
CSEIF which comprised of National Advocacy Platform (NAP) and Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) in partnership with many civil society organisations is slated for launch on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, in the capital Lilongwe.
Addressing the news conference on Wednesday, January 22, CSEIF interim leaders Benedicto Kondowe and Gift Trapance said the initiative represents a landmark effort to strengthen civil society’s role in
promoting free, fair, and credible elections in Malawi.
Reads CSEIF statement to the press, “The Foundation of Democracy Election integrity lies at the core of democracy. It ensures that every vote counts and every voice is heard.
“CSEIF has been established as a unified platform to promote transparency, counter misinformation, and build trust in Malawi’s electoral processes”.
The grouping observes, “Drawing on regional and global lessons, we understand that organized and engaged civil society enhances the transparency, inclusivity, and credibility of elections”.
“As former UN SecretaryGeneral Kofi Annan aptly stated, “Elections are the ultimate test of a democracy. They give people the opportunity to hold their leaders accountable.”
CSEIF is dedicated to ensuring Malawi meets and exceeds this test.
Kondowe assures, “An Initiative Rooted in Collaboration
CSEIF is the product of extensive regional consultations conducted in the North, East, South, and
soon Centre of Malawi. These consultations, involving diverse stakeholders, have shaped a strong
and inclusive platform for collective advocacy and action.
“The role of civil society in ensuring credible elections remains as vital today as ever. As Ban Kimoon aptly stated, “Civil society is the guardian of democracy, ensuring that elections are transparent, accountable, and reflective of the people’s will.”
The statement adds, “Similarly, we echo Desmond Tutu’s profound insight: “Without the vigilance of civil society, the integrity of elections is vulnerable to
manipulation, disenfranchisement, and corruption.”
“Together, let us remain steadfast in our mission to safeguard democracy and uphold the will of the people”.
According to Trapence, CSEIF seeks to Champion transparency, inclusivity, and accountability in Malawi’s electoral processes.
“CSEIF seeks to protect constitutionalism and uphold democratic principles and bridge gaps between electoral stakeholders and foster collaboration.
“It also seeks to erve as a neutral platform to address electoral challenges and counter misinformation. By defending constitutional values and promoting political stability, CSEIF aims to ensure that Malawi’s elections reflect the true will of its people”.
Call for unified support, to achieve its mission, CSEIF calls on stakeholders to join hands in this effort including Government and political party leadership to provide an enabling environment for
electoral integrity.
“We seek support from The Malawi Electoral Commission to uphold neutrality, transparency, and inclusivity; The Peace and Unity Commission to champion dialogue and resolve disputes; The Malawi Human Rights Commission to promote respect for human rights, including freedom of expression, association and opinion pre, during and after the election; The Judiciary to foster just and effective legal remedies for all.
“CSEIF also seeks support from law enforcement agencies to promote national peace and protect human rights; Development Partners to support the platform with resources and expertise; Chisankho Network, 50:50 Campaign, National Initiative for Civic Education Trust (NICE) and Centre for Multiparty Democracy (CMD) to strengthen collaboration and
information sharing and the Civil Society, Religious bodies, professional bodies and Media to amplify messages of accountability, peace, and integrity”, appeals the statement further.
Concluds the grouping, “CSEIF is a bold and transformative step toward safeguarding the integrity of Malawi’s elections. With its official launch approaching, we reaffirm our commitment to fostering free, fair, and credible elections.
“As we move forward, we are reminded of Abraham Lincoln’s timeless words: “The ballot is
stronger than the bullet when it is protected by the shield of integrity.” Together, we can ensure that this test is not only passed but celebrated, securing a democratic future for Malawi that is rooted in justice, peace, and unity”.
Malawi goes to general polls on September 16, 2025.
