LILONGWE–(MaraviPost)FDH Bank plc has reaffirmed its dedication to promoting grassroots sports in Malawi, pledging continued sponsorship of the Mayor’s Trophy, a tournament it has been supporting since 2018.

The bank’s Head of Personal and Business Banking, Daniel Pinto Khamula, made the announcement on Friday, April 11, 2025, at the Bingu National Stadium during the Intercity Mayor’s FDH Bank Trophy finals.

“We are excited to keep investing in initiatives like this,” Khamula said. “At FDH Bank, we see young people as an essential investment. We’ve supported national teams and other sports activities, but focusing on youth was a natural choice. We began this journey in 2018, and we’re still committed because we believe in long-term partnerships, especially in sports.”

Khamula also revealed that FDH Bank will invest K300 million over the next three years to further support the Mayor’s Trophy.

Lilongwe City Mayor Esther Sagawa expressed satisfaction with how the tournament had been conducted across the three major cities, beginning from zonal stages to the intercity finals.

“We are delighted with the conclusion of the tournament and the active participation of our residents,” Sagawa said. “Beyond playing, we are nurturing hidden talent. We’ve seen stars like Gabadinho Mhango and Mary Waya, who were also discovered through such initiatives. We are very grateful to FDH Bank for being the sole sponsor, and we call upon other stakeholders to join in supporting these games.”

In the football finals, Chidzingwe Primary School from Lilongwe City emerged champions after defeating Katoto from Mzuzu 4-3 on penalties, following a goalless draw in regulation time.

In the third-place match, Namasimba from Blantyre City beat Zomba Police 2-0.

In netball, St. Maria Goretti from Blantyre narrowly edged Zolozolo from Mzuzu 20-19. Cobbe Barracks secured third place with a 17-14 win over Kamkodola from Lilongwe.
