Inmates at Chichiri Prison in Blantyre have complained about delays in receiving food, with some going without meals for up to four days.

The inmates told Zodiak Online that the situation is particularly dire for those with underlying health conditions who rely on medication.

According to the inmates, the food delays have caused significant hardship, especially for those with health issues.

“We have been going without food for four days, and this is affecting us greatly, especially those of us with health conditions who need to take our medication,” said one inmate.

However, Samson Misso, the prison spokesperson, has denied the allegations, citing a power outage as the reason for the delay. Misso explained that food for the inmates is prepared at Mapanga training School and that the delay in serving meals is due to logistical issues.

“The food is prepared at Mapanga training School, and sometimes there are delays in serving it to the inmates,” Misso said, adding that,”We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and are working to resolve the issue as soon as possible.”

The inmates’ complaints highlight the challenges faced by the prison system in Malawi. Overcrowding, inadequate food, and poor living conditions are some of the issues that plague the country’s prisons.

The situation at Chichiri Prison is not unique, as many prisons in Malawi struggle to provide adequate food and healthcare to inmates. Human rights organizations have long called for reforms in the prison system, citing the need for improved living conditions and better treatment of inmates.
