BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Beyond Our Hearts Foundation has donated 60 bags of maize to 60 households in group village head Nsikita under T/A Njema in Mulanje district.

The donation, made possible with support from the Malawi Diaspora Network – USA, aims to help families affected by Cyclone Freddy and dry spells.

Russel Msiska, Executive Director of Beyond Our Hearts Foundation, said the maize will help the hunger-stricken families survive during these difficult times.

The foundation, based in Neno, focuses on responding to the impacts of disasters and finding solutions to mitigate climate change shocks.

Group Village Headman Malunda advised the beneficiaries not to sell the maize, emphasizing its importance in helping them survive the current food shortages. “This maize is a lifeline for your families, and it’s crucial that you use it wisely,” Malunda said.

The donation has been welcomed by the community, with Chairperson for the Area Development Committee, Dick Zangwa, describing it as timely.

“Many households in our area did not harvest enough due to the effects of climate change, so this donation is a much-needed relief,” Zangwa said.

He called on other organizations to emulate the gesture, highlighting the ongoing need for support in the area.

Maggie Mikatere, a beneficiary from Malunda village, expressed gratitude for the donation. “The 50kg bag of maize will help my family survive for weeks,” she said.

Mikatere emphasized that the hunger situation in the area requires a multisectoral approach to address the root causes of food insecurity.

The effects of Cyclone Freddy and dry spells have been devastating for many families in Mulanje district, with crop failures and food shortages becoming increasingly common.

The donation from Beyond Our Hearts Foundation provides a vital lifeline for those struggling to make ends meet.

Beyond Our Hearts Foundation’s efforts to support vulnerable communities in the face of climate-related disasters are commendable.

As the organization continues to respond to the needs of affected communities, its work serves as a reminder of the importance of humanitarian support in times of crisis.

The Malawi Diaspora Network – USA’s support for the donation highlights the importance of diaspora communities in contributing to development initiatives back home.

As Malawi continues to face the challenges of climate change, initiatives like this demonstrate the power of collaboration and collective action in addressing the needs of vulnerable communities.
