Egypt FA snubs Zambia friendly over Avram Grant’s Gaza stance

LUSAKA-(MaraviPost)-The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has reportedly turned down a proposed international friendly against Zambia following widespread criticism over Zambia head coach Avram Grant’s alleged support for Israel’s military operations in Gaza.

According to several Egyptian media outlets, the EFA was in discussions to organize a warm up fixture against the Chipolopolo as part of preparations for upcoming international competitions.

However the plans were dropped amid a public outcry linking Grant’s nationality and political views to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Grant, an Israeli national and former Chelsea manager, has long been vocal about his support for Israel.

Egyptian commentators and sports analysts have accused him of backing Israel’s military actions against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip a conflict that has sparked global condemnation and widespread protests across the Arab world, including Egypt.

An unnamed EFA official told local reporters that playing Zambia under Grant’s leadership could be interpreted as an indirect endorsement of his political stance, which would upset Egyptian fans and the wider Arab football community.

“Football is meant to unite people, but we cannot ignore the sentiments of our supporters and the humanitarian situation in Gaza,” the official said.

The development comes at a time when tensions over the Gaza conflict have spilled into various sectors, including sports.

Several athletes and teams across the Middle East have faced criticism or boycotts for engaging with Israeli counterparts or individuals perceived to support Israel’s military operations.

Grant, who has managed Zambia since 2022, has not publicly commented on the controversy. The Zambian FA also has yet to release a statement addressing Egypt’s decision.
