BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has disclosed that it requires at least K500 million to meet travel, accommodation and other logistical costs for the Malawi Women’s National Football Team, the Scorchers, ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
FAM President Fleetwood Haiya said the association has already engaged the Malawi Government and is also in discussions with National Bank of Malawi Plc, the official sponsor of the Scorchers, to help raise the required funds.
Haiya explained that the budget is essential to guarantee adequate preparations before the team travels to Morocco, which will host the WAFCON finals in March 2026.
He emphasized that FAM is determined to implement a comprehensive preparation programme that will enable the Scorchers to compete effectively at the continental showpiece.
Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Patricia Wisikes, confirmed that government has established a special committee tasked with mobilising resources to ensure the team’s smooth participation at the tournament.
“As government, we are ready to support the team so that it performs well. At the moment we are looking for ideas on areas where government can assist.
“The special committee is also engaging well wishers and corporate partners to come on board and support the team,” said Wisikes.
Wisikes reassured FAM of government’s continued commitment to providing various forms of support to ensure the Scorchers prepare adequately and compete strongly.
At WAFCON 2026, the Scorchers have been drawn in Group C alongside continental heavyweights Nigeria, Egypt and Zambia.
