Addressing a news conference in Lilongwe yesterday ahead of commemoration of international day of human rights which falls on December 10 every year, Chairperson of the Malawi Human rights commission Justin Dzonzi said the country has performed well in
defending human rights particularly on Civil and Political rights.
“We have seen a significance improve in Civil and Political rights such as freedom of expression, right to life and freedom of association among others which is quite commendable” he said
However, he noted some gaps that need to be filled in promotion of economic social and cultural rights citing intermediate delivery of water and electricity, education and health.
“There problems in access to safe and clean water in many parts of the country and we see it as violation of human rights and even in our schools there are no learning and teaching materials and when we go in our hospitals there is scarcity of drugs and other medicals supplies, we are asking those responsible to improve on these rights” said Dzonzi.
ON ISSA NJAUJU DEATH
The commission said it is following the matter with keen interest as investigations on his death are underway.
But he said if in any case the investigations are being delayed deliberately the commission will have no Choice but to take to task on why those who were supposed to investigate the matter are not investigating.
