Man drowns in Liwawadzi River in Balaka

Balaka, January 16, 2019. A mentally disturbed man identified as  Ganosi Cham’boma, 25, has been found dead  along the Liwawadzi River Bank after drowning, Police have confirmed.

According to Thomas Mamba, 45, who is a brother-in-law to the deceased, the  incident occurred on January 13, 2019 at around 09:00hours.

Mamba told Malawi News Agency (Mana) in an interview that the decease used to go out without the knowledge of his parents and relatives but would always come back.
“On 10th January, 2019 at around 14:00 hours, he left home as usual without  the knowledge of the relatives and night fell without him coming back which prompted the relatives to start searching for him but could not be found.

“On 13th January, 2019 at around 09:00 hours, he was found dead along the banks of the said river. It is believed he was washed away by the water as he tried to cross,” said Mamba.

Balaka Police Public Relations Officer, Precious Makuta in an interview on Tuesday said postmortem conducted at Balaka District Hospital reveled that his death was due to suffocation.

Meanwhile, Balaka Police Station is appealing to members of the general public to closely monitor people with mental illnesses and children as well, to avoid similar accidents.

Ganosi Cham’boma hailed from Chikuse Village, Traditional Authority Sawali in Balaka.
